Exploratory factor analysis (principal components followed varimax rotation) of 34 StrengthsQuest theme rankings found 11 factors. The results replicate and extend an earlier report of correlations between StrengthsQuest theme subscales and indicators of Holland’s six vocational personality types. Implications are discussed for the use of the StrengthsQuest in career assessment.

Lead exposure has been associated with delayed pubertal onset in girls; however, epidemiologic data in boys are limited. METHODS: We used multivariable logistic regression models to explore the cross-sectional association of blood lead levels with growth and pubertal onset based on physician-assessed testicular volume (TV) and pubertal staging in 489 boys 8–9 years of age from Chapaevsk, Russia. We used multivariable linear regression models to assess associations of blood lead levels with somatic growth at the study entry visit. RESULTS: The median (25th–75th percentile) blood lead level was 3 µg/dL (2–5 µg/dL). Height, weight, body mass index, birth weight, and gestational age were predictive of the onset of puberty as assessed either by TV (> 3 mL), genitalia stage (G2), or ...

Taking advantage of the “big data” available in an online university, we conducted a study in which a massive online database was used to predict student successes and failures. We found that a pattern of declining performance over time is a good predictor of the likelihood of dropping out, and that having dependents or being married or in the military reduces the risk of dropping out. The risk of dropping out was higher for older students, females, and students with previous college education or transfer credits. These results provide a foundation for testing interventions to help students who are at risk and will also help to inform the development of a “research pipeline” that will enable rapid experimental studies of new tools and strategies.

The OCW Backpack system can connect self-learners with KNEXT assessment services to obtain college credit for prior learning. An ex post facto study based on historical data collected over the past two years at Kaplan University (KU) is presented to validate the portfolio assessment process. Cumulative GPA was compared for students who received experiential credit for learning derived from personal or professional experience with a matched sample of students with no experiential learning credits. The study found that students who received experiential credits perform better than the matched sample students on GPA. The findings validate the KU portfolio assessment process. Additionally, the results support the capability of the OCW Backpack to capture the critical information necessary to evaluate nontraditional lear...
