The social psychology of aging is introduced as an interdependent relationship between social psy... more The social psychology of aging is introduced as an interdependent relationship between social psychology and developmental psychology, both viewed in a historical and social-cultural context. The social psychology of aging is assumed, then, as a critical alternative consistent with the contextual and dialectical lifespan perspective. Such perspective is presented as an integrative view of human development and aging, and it is illustrated with contributions from psychologists who have helped to consolidate it. It is enriched with approaches of the ecology of human development, and a contextualized view of culture. Finally, the need to overcome ahistorical and culturally decontextualized perspectives on development and aging throughout the lifespan is considered in order to contribute to building societies for all ages.
