They give shelter, provide interchange and convey emotions. Nowadays they are rapidly becoming the habitat for the majority of people, and are responsible for the majority of energy consumption in the planet. They are, simply put, key elements of our lives.

The conceptual foundation of form has been a recurring theme in the history of architecture. Beyond the aspect that at each moment and from each position one wants to give to...

A joint effort between Catalan architects and Russian academia and businesses with support from European experts, BCNow!’s first edition became a training ground for fifteen Russian professionals and activists from diverse backgrounds in Saint Petersburg in 2014-2015 seeking to explore an alternative understanding of the city and its production in their practices. Based on the idea of transdisciplinarity, the program was developed with a hands-on approach. This paper reflects on the experience and lessons from BCNow! contextualizing it in the existing traditions of urban thinking, discusses the idea of transdisciplinarity by relating it to comparable experiences, and zooms onto the specifics of the curriculum...

His work, although mostly consisting of few, rather small single-family houses, places him as the most influential of his generation in Japan today. In his designs of the mid-1970s he uses concrete frame structures as a fundamental device to question the foundations of domesticity. By contrasting scales and textures, and the geometry and dimension of support elements, achieves a de-domestication of the house and turns it into a total space of emotion.

These two elements were present in his preoccupations from the beginning of his career but he only managed to merge them in his last designs. lt is based on the assumption that this is one of the first in-depth research studies developed beyond the conventional segmentation and explanation of his work. lt thus considers it more important to open new perspectives on Shinohara's oeuvre than to foc us exclusively on one of them, a task that might be pursued later on. Analyzing sorne of Shinohara's first writings and using as a starting point his simultaneous design of two very different houses, House in White and House of Earth (1964-1966), this thesis delineates a ...
