E' insita, dunque, nella definizione etimologica, l'umiltà di quello strumento che prende il nome da un diminutivo ed è più comune di quello dal quale deriva. Più umile ancora se è napoletano, poiché anche la sua cordiera è ridotta: la mandola ebbe nove o dieci corde, ed il mandolino milanese ne serbò dieci, mentre il mandolino napoletano ne ha soltanto quattro paia, che in fondo sono un semplice raddoppio delle quattro corde del liuto primitivo, montatura che in prosieguo crebbe a cinque ed infine alle sei corde rimaste oggidì alla chitarra. Peggio: il mandolino milanese ha i suoi clubs, le sue società, le sue accademie, mentre la mandola è confinata tra gli aggeggi da museo; ma il mandolino napoletano non ha clubs, non ha società, non ha accademie: risente della tabe dissociativa che ammala ed impoverisce i cittadini di questa città mussulmana del Tirreno: ha cultori isolati, un po' simili ai citaredi di Viggiano cari alla poesia di Pietro Paolo Parzanese… Mandolino e mandola hanno un progenitore nel liuto – c'è dunque anche del darwinismo in fatto di strumenti, ma in questo caso è darwinismo a rovescio: la scimmia, nella proporzione, sta più al mandolino che alla mandola-e ne ricopiarono la forma. Poi la chitarra subentrò alla mandola come all'arpa subentrò l'organo. Ma il mandolino, che se accompagnato dalla chitarra è delizioso, può fare anche a meno della chitarra: individualista come i suoi concittadini, dunque! Certo, la pleiade dei mandolinisti partenopei non conta le glorie dei liutisti famosi:sperduti tra le pieghe della storia musicale, pure se ospitati in case principesche, valgono da meno: più manipolo di zingari che compagnie disciplinate; più epigoni assetati di lucro che di gloria!………..
