The innovative character of these practices refers to the actual ability to face a problem which usually constitutes a limitation for the implementation of security and prevention policies. The text makes apparent that these urban policies have been possible thanks to decentralisation on the part of the federal government and it is based on a vision of national cohesion which upholds prevention on the basis of social development rather than on penal measures. From this analysis, the article shows certain relevant aspects to consider if these practices are to be put in place within the Chilean institutional context. In particular, it underlines those elements which refer to the institutional framework, the formulation of socio-political context and the features and role of civil society and the police model
