The Cross no longer exists but it is mentioned indirectly by Vasari and is recorded in numerous sources after the discovery on the painting in 1623 of the Pisan artist's name -then totally unknown- and of the donor Friar Elia, who was represented at the foot of the Cross, at that time the Minister General of the Friars Minor. The author hypothesises that the figure of Friar Elia was flanked by that of Saint Francis represented kneeling of Golgotha, drawing nourishment from the body of Christ, similar to the iconography adopted by the Poor Clares of Assisi for the Cross with the figure of the Abbess Benedetta -the first abbess after St. Clare- just as Friar Elia was the first notable Franciscan Minister General after St. Francis. By examining the iconography of the Cross of St. Clare the author attempts a reconstruction of Giunta's Cross and studies the development of the painted cross during the course of the 13th century, beginning with the examples by Berlinghiero and Giunta and concluding with the Cross by the "Master of St. Francis" of 1272 in the National Gallery of Umbria.
