Aims: The aim of this study was to quantify the prevalence and risk factors of diabetes among secretariat employees of Bangladesh. Settings and Design: A random sample of 1000 employees of Bangladesh Secretariat was included in this cross sectional study. Methods and Material: Blood glucose levels, both Fasting (FPG) and 2-hours after 75gm load, total cholesterol, triglycerides were measured in each case. Body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, was measured as well as collection of information regarding risk factors and socio-demographic variables. Statistical analysis used: Univariate analysis of all variables was done. Cohen’s Kappa was used to find agreement and odds ratios were calculated to assess risk factors. Results: The prevalence of diabetes was 12.3% and 7.5% according to FB...

The absolute number of multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB) is expected to be high considering high TB burden. This study was aimed to determine the resistance pattern of mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isolates among different category of patient. Method: A total 1123 randomly selected patients having clinical and or radiological features of tuberculosis attending out patients department of NIDCH were enrolled in this study during January to December, 2008. Sputum were collected and processed for culture by digestion, decontamination and concentration following modified Petroff’s method and were inoculated on to two slopes of Lowenstein- Jensen (L-J) media for six weeks. The identity of the isolates was made by growth rate, colony morphology, P-nitrobenzoic acid (PNB) susceptibility, catalase and nitrate reduction tests. Ultimately drug susceptibility testing (DST) were performed.

We sought to get a profile of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in a tertiary care hospital in the Dhaka city. Methods: This direct observational study was undertaken from June to October 2008 among the hospital admitted patients with a diagnosis of DHF. Result: Out of 55 patients with DHF, 87.27 % came from urban areas. About 43.64 % patients showed various types of active bleeding in association with different clinical features. 100% patients had relative bradycardia. Tourniquet test was positive in 43.63 % patients. IgM and/or IgG antibody titer to dengue virus were positive in 85 % cases. Conclusion: The clinical picture of Dengue is not as diverse as other regions of the world and the National guideline is till now found to be effective in adequate management, Dengue is endemic in 112 countries with an estimated 100 million cases per year. 1 Each year, between 250,000 and 500,000 cases are reported as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) due...

Both diseases present similar chronic inflammatory lesions and occasionally granulomas on the arterial walls. We report a case of simultaneous presence of Takayasu’s arteritis and tuberculosis in a 20 year old lady. She presented with fever, pain and intermittent claudication of all four limbs and easy fatigability for two months. We found an enlarged lymph node in left axillary region. All the peripheral pulses were absent and measurement of blood pressure was not possible. Her ESR was 62 mm in 1 st hour and C reactive protein was 12mg/L. Duplex vascular USG revealed significant narrowing of both subclavian arteries and descending abdominal aorta. Histopathology of left axillary lymph node showed caseating tubercles suggestive of granulamatous tuberculous lymphadenitis.

The hospital medical records of all patients, aged 10 years and above with history of acute poisoning from January, 2003 to December, 2006 were enrolled. Patients were categorized into four age group including Group (Gr.) I, Gr. II, Gr. III & Gr. IV having age range of 10-20, 21-30, 31-40 & >40 respectively. Underlying causes of poisoning were also observed totally and individually in different mode with male, female ratio and the percentage. Death cases according to mode of poisoning with demographic alignment were also observed. Statistical analysis were done using epi-info version 3.5.1 and measures were presented as proportion and percentage....
