This work influenced profound changes in theforms and styles ofworship in theWestern churches. Devotio Moderna, and their growth has been gradual over the centuries; however, only in our time have they been thoroughly unleashed. Perhaps it has been the lack of communion between East and West that has fostered the absence of holy fear, for the preservation of that fear is our special gift. Perhaps the West can regain true worship only in communion with the East, just as our own innumerable wounds can be healed only in communion with our Western brethren. But we must both be willing to learn from one another, and we must both be willing to change. Only in communion can we attain to mutual love, and so to the everlasting communion with the Trinity that alone is our salvation. 0

This essay seeks to provide a theological and ecc1esiological argument for the diaconate, drawing upon the work of the Swedish ecc1esiologist, Sven-Erik Brodd. But to provide a foundation for that argument we begin by affirming, with some evidenee, that the officeof deacon was an integraI component of the historic three-fold ministry ofword andsacrament as that emerged in the early church.

The directions are called rubrics, from the Latin ruber (red). This is because the directions were written or printed in red ink, so as to call attention to them and to distinguish them from what would be said or sung.

I assume that I am writing for readers who are friendly toward or even partisans of this movement.i We have contributed to it and reaped the benefits of it. We have seen the success of the liturgical movement manifested not only in our officialdenominational worship books, but also in our practices: e.g. in the frequency with which the Eucharist is celebrated on Sundays and festivals; in the firm establishment of the principle of preaching on the Scripture readings in the lectionary rather than on a "topic"; in the greater prominence given to the celebration of Holy Baptism in parish life; in the selection and use of church music which contributes to the content as well as the spirit of the liturgical celebration; in church architecture which gathers the congregation around the Table of the Lord; in the designof paraments, vestments, andbannerswhich invade the consciousness of the worshipers with the meaning ofliturgical time in the use of the colors and symbols; in efforts to relate liturgy to life, especially in intercessory prayer and in the recognition of the priestly vocation of the people of God at the offertory.
