With the purpose to understand consumer’s behaviour and constraints faced by trout consumers in K... more With the purpose to understand consumer’s behaviour and constraints faced by trout consumers in Kashmir valley, the present study was conducted during the period 2014-15. Data for the study was collected by conducting personal interview of trout consumers visiting trout farms for the purchase of trouts on the day of survey and willing to participate in the survey with help of specially designed questionnaire for the study. The result revealed that only 8.24 percent of the total household expenditure was for the purchase of fish. Trout was the most preferred fish followed by schizothorax, carp and cat fish on sample households. About 33.33 percent of the consumers bought trout once a month, 28.33 percent once a week,16.67 percent occasionally, 13.33 percent twice a month, 5 percent twice a week, 1.67 percent more than twice a month and 1.67 percent bought once a year. Potential of cage culture as a key technological intervention in open water bodies to enhance fis... more Potential of cage culture as a key technological intervention in open water bodies to enhance fish productivity is well known and which is also recognised by government for achieving blue revolution goals. The present study is an attempt to investigate the economics of GI pipe cage manufacturing in Jharkhand. The result revealed that GI pipe cage manufacturing was a capital oriented enterprise requiring high initial investment for the establishing cage manufacturing unit. The costs and return analysis showed total cost to be Rs.9.05 crores generating gross revenue of Rs.12 crores per annum. It was observed that variable cost contribute about 96.64 percent while fixed cost contribute only 3.36 percent of the total cost respectively. The procurement of raw materials was found to contribute the lion share in cost of production which was 90.64 percent (Rs.8.17 crores) of the total cost. To understand the income generation through fish seed production through the community participation approach initiative of the Directorate of fisheries, Jharkhand, we analyzed the income distribution pattern of 498 fish seed producers of Jharkhand. The data was collected from different districts of Jharkhand by DoF for the year 2017-18. The results revealed high gender disparity in fish seed production as only 2.41 per cent were found out to be women. It was observed that fish seed production has a high potential to be a very lucrative business as income showed wide variation ranging fromRs.50,000 to Rs.27,50,000. The Lorenz curve analysis showed moderate-income inequality indicating a higher concentration of income with the top 10 per cent of the population. Cold water fisheries are one of the emerging sectors in Kashmir valley and trout holds an important place Jammu and Kashmir fisheries. Realizing the immense potential of trout culture in Kashmir region, the state fisheries department started privatizing trout culture under the centrally funded scheme of RKVY in which they provide 80 percent subsidy for raceway construction and supply of feed and seed for the first year since 200910 and at present there are 362 private trout farms. To cater the growing demand for trout in the valley, it is important to understand the bottlenecks faced in the propagation of trout culture. There is lack of species diversity in the market and the locally grown high value Trout fish has not made way into the local market and are sold at farm gate price. In this study an attempt was made to understand the marketing problems in Kashmir. It was found that there was only one wholesale market at Chattabal and very few retailers who own proper marketing retail outlets, rest all sell fish on footpath at different locations in the city hence they are categorised as vendor by the author to make the study simple. The wholesale and retail markets are dominated purely by men, while vendors were solely women and all the vendors were illiterate. Analysis of investment in fixed inventories incurred by different market intermediaries found Rs.36600, Rs.18573.33 and Rs.2989 were incurred by wholesaler, retailer and vendor, respectively.
