These caves are locally called “Vore” and can be described like collapse dolines (with the depth usually higher than the base diameter) or solution chimney due to developments of drain system in closed depressions. The “Vore di Barbarano” (“Vora Piccola” and “Vora Grande”) are two of the biggest vertical caves of the Salento peninsula, about 35 and 25 m deep. Although they show some similarities with other dolines of the Salento, they are morphologically more complex, being formed by two superimposed chambers. The entries are sub-elliptical, irregular due to rockfalls and anthropic activity of quarry. The spelaelogical, geomorphological, stratigraphic, hydrogeological and biological observations carried out in the studied area may give us information about the spelaegenetic mechanism causing karst systems evolution. KARST FEATURES OF SERRA CICORA (NARDÒ, LECCE PROVINCE) - The Serra Cicora area (Southern Apulia, ... more KARST FEATURES OF SERRA CICORA (NARDÒ, LECCE PROVINCE) - The Serra Cicora area (Southern Apulia, Italy) consists of Cretaceous limestones covered by Upper Pleistocene calcarenites. Owing to the predominance of Calcareous rocks, surface and underground landforms are affected by karstic phenomena. The speleogenesis of sub-aerial and sub-marine caves is related to the local geoogical evolution. An enhanced dissolution of calcareous rocks is recognized at the origin of the sinkholes (known locally as "spunnulate") present in the coastal plain, as well as of the inlets of the shoreline. Some relationships between karst landscapes and habitats for botanic species are also described. The hydrogeological features of the Serra Cicora area appear to justify the presence of prehistoric populations in the area.
