The authors sought to model the unique and common variance across conduct disorder, substance mis... more The authors sought to model the unique and common variance across conduct disorder, substance misuse, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to investigate the neurocognitive factors that relate generally or uniquely to externalizing problems in adolescence. Personality and behavioral measures and functional imaging responses to reward sensitivity and response inhibition tasks were assessed in 1,778 European adolescents at age 14 and, using structural equation modeling, were related to the unique and common variance across externalizing problems assessed and modeled at ages 14 and 16. Externalizing problems best fit a general-specific model made up of a specific factor representing ADHD and conduct disorder symptoms, a specific factor representing substance misuse symptoms, and a common externalizing factor representing the variance shared among all symptoms. They may be differentially effective depending on the context and motivational significance. The present study aimed to test the significance of different contexts in modulating alcohol‐related cue reactivity. Pictures depicting alcohol intake or its paraphernalia and pictures without any relation to alcohol intake were varied to depict physical and social contexts or different consumptive contexts associated with full/half‐full/empty alcohol beverage containers. We obtained ratings of craving, valence and arousal of the cues as well as skin conductance responses (SCRs) and startle reflex modulation measures from 21 abstinent alcohol‐dependent patients, recruited from an addiction treatment center, and 21 matched healthy controls. Background: While the etiology of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) remains unclear, it is assumed that... more Background: While the etiology of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) remains unclear, it is assumed that both peripheral and central components are involved.Aims/methods: To investigate central activation patterns following chemically‐induced muscle pain we repetitively injected protons (low pH) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in isotonic solution into the left extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle of female FMS patients and female healthy control subjects (HC). The injection of protons/PGE2 has the advantage that it is not prone to tachyphylaxis compared to capsaicin and hypotonic saline solution. During the repetitive injections continuous pain ratings were recorded and functional magnetic resonance imaging measurements were conducted.Results: Injection of protons/PGE2 led to activation of the anterior and medial cingulate cortices, contralateral primary sensory cortex, bilateral insula and thalamus, left basal ganglia, left orbitofrontal cortex and the cerebellum in FMS patients.
