The direct and indirect effects of COVID-19 on health and well-being are still being investigated. In addition to the direct impacts of COVID-19 disease, social distancing and lockdown measures have had a significant and unequal effect on individuals, households, and communities through restrictions imposed on our daily social an d economic activities. Long-term conditions are expected to have worsened for many people during the lockdown. There are particular concerns about delayed cancer diagnoses, and the subsequent effects as national health service services are resumed. There is growing evidence that patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 disease may have a prolonged illness with frequent relapses.

Methods: This double-blind, randomized controlled trial study was conducted on patients with stable subacute stroke. For 8 weeks, the intervention group (n=16) received 40% intensity IMT while the control group (n=16) received 10% intensity IMT. We assessed the patients’ lung function (spirometer) before and after the intervention, as well as their pulmonary muscle strength (micro-respiratory pressure meter [RPM]), quadriceps strength (handheld dynamometer), grip strength (Jamar), walking speed (10-m walk test), balance (Berg Balance Scale [BBS]), and functional mobilization (sit-to-stand test). Results: There were significant differences between the intervention group and the control group after IMT for forced vital capacit...

Balance has an important role in conducting daily activities and mobility, with impaired balance it can lead to negative impacts for example fall. This study is conducted to obtain common factors and characteristics of older adults with balance disorder to provide better rehabilitation services. Method: A descriptive study was conducted in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung from August-October 2014 using total sampling method and a 5 times sit-to-stand (5STS) test was conducted. The total sample obtained was 34. Result: The characteristics of older adult with balance disorder in this study were mostly from young old (n=17), male gender (n=19), and mean 5STS test is 18.48 seconds. Most of the patients had high blood pressure (n=29), normal body mass index (BMI) (n=22), independent activity of daily living (ADL) (n=21), and use of greater than 3 medication (n=21).The...

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on community-dwelling elderly in Bandung from September to December 2014. One hundred and thirty elderly, 60 years old or above, were evaluated using bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure muscle mass; grip strength to measure muscle strength and muscle fatigue resistance; habitual gait speed to measure physical performance; and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) to assess physical activity. Results: There were significant positive correlations between muscle mass (r=0,27, p=0,0019), muscle strength (r=0,26, p=0,0024), and physical performance (r=0,32, p=0,0002) with muscle fatigue resistance. Physical performance has the highest correlation based on multiple regre...

However, the prevalence of the elderly doing exercise is low, and muscle-strengthening exercise is even lower. Therefore, physical inactivity has been reported as a significant health problem worldwide. Many assistive devices have been developed to overcome the problems of lack of engagement. This study explores opinions from the elderly regarding an acceptable and affordable technology-based design that focuses on the strength training specific to the elderly in two middle-class nursing homes in Indonesia. This paper presents qualitative findings from 37 participants who are part of an ongoing study. The results of this study show that when creating an interactive device for the elderly, easy procedures, a small lightweight-looking device, direct rewards, and instructor companionship should become the main considerations.

We have all been affected by the crisis in some way and have been forced to adapt. While it remains to be seen whether the markers of social experiences will become part of the “new normal,” one thing is certain for intellectual work: researchers will need to record and analyze how different societies havebeen managed inability to respond to the COVID-19 problematics, to learn from one another and to pinpoint the working logics of various social formations.

The objective of the case report was to define the importance of physical medicine and rehabilitation intervention as an approach for an elderly patient with NPH. CASE REPORT: A 75-year-old woman presented with a balance and gait disturbance after injury from a motor vehicle accident. The patient experience Hakim’s triad (gait disturbance, urinary frequency, and mild cognitive impairment), and her computed tomography scan of the head revealed ventriculomegaly, multiple lacunar infarctions on the paraventricle, and cerebral atrophy, which could indicate NPH. Balance and gait training, cardiopulmonary training, and environment modification were interventions from physical medicine and rehabilitation provided to this patient. CONCLUSION: An elderly patient with NPH should receive physical medicine and rehabilitation intervention to p...

This condition is frequently associated with loss of mobility and functions. This study aimed to explore the relationship between physical performance and handgrip strength, body composition, and anthropometry in community-dwelling older adults living in Bandung, West Java Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was performed from December 2015 to June 2016 on community-dwelling older adults above 60 years old who were the members of the West Java Branch of Lembaga Lansia Indonesia, Indonesia, with the ability to walk without an assistive device and to perform hand grip properly as an additional inclusion criterion. Subjects were excluded if they experienced severe cardiorespiratory or vascular abnormalities, used artificial implants, underwent hormone therapy, and had any disease that would affect the accuracy of the variable measurement. A total of 106 subjects (60-...

Aerobic exercise improves functional capacity (FC) is strongly recommended. However, evidence regarding the most efficient exercise intensity for patients post Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) is still limited. This study aimed to assess the effects of high-intensity intervalexercise (HIIT) compared to moderate-continous intensity exercise (MCT) for increasing FC in patients post CABG. Methods: True experimental pre-post study included 6 men post CABG participating in a phase II cardiac rehabilitation (CR) with age ≤ 65 years old, ejection fraction ≥ 40%, no heart failure, no valve disease. Each group had 3 participants. HIIT group exercise at 80-90% Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) followed by 60-70% HRR active rest periods, MCT group exercised at 60-80% HRR. Both groups trained 3 days/week for 4 weeks. FC measured at baseline and after 4 weeks of rehabilitation. FC was ...

This study aimed to determine the association between flatfoot and the quality of life among children 5-18 years of age. Methods A cross sectional design was used in this study of children aged 5-18 years. The diagnosis of flatfoot was made in accordance with the Chippaux-Smirak Index classification, whereas general and domain-specific quality of life were measured using the Indonesian version of PedsQL™ that has been previously validated. Mann Whitney test was used to compare quality of life between children with flatfoot and normal feet, along with other variables that potentially may influence a child’s quality of life. Results A total of 79 out of 120 subjects was used to analyze the data. There was a statistically significant difference in the quality of life score in the school function...
