Chi/d sexual abuse cases (n = 45) from two Chi/d and Youth Protection Centres in Ouebec were reviewed through a questionnaire administered to the practitioners and a review Qf the agencies' case files and computerized process records. A dramatic drop in reported incidence in chi/d sexual abuse cases in Ouebec was noted and discussed. A mean delay of 3 years was found between the start of the abuse and its disclosure. Ali the abusers were men, and ail the victims, except one, were girls. Significant relationships were found between the length of stay in the first stages of the process and the complexity and number of referrals.

The sample consisted of 131 children up to 18 years of age and 78 mothers referred by the Centres jeunesse de la Montérégie in Quebec and three Centres locaux de services communautaires in the region. Mothers fit the typical neglect profile: young, poor, uneducated, and single parents; they were also depressed, under stress, and socially isolated, indicating the complexity and structural nature of the problem. Forty per cent of the mothers had themselves been placed as children, and almost one third of the children had been previously under youth protection, demonstrating the chronic nature of neglect. Mothers showed improvement in levels of depression, satisfaction with parental role, and maternal competency. However, parental stress increased except in those cases where children were placed. Mothers perceived positive changes in boys' externalized behaviour problems, but their perception of girls' problems did not change. Findings led to the subsequent implementation of two new projects, an intervention research project and a follow-up study.

Our study is based on a subset of data from the New Canadian Children and Youth Study (NCCYS), a national longitudinal survey in-cluding 515 foreign-born immigrant children (11 to 13 years) from three ethnic groups (Mainland China, Hong Kong, the Philippines) living in the Montreal and Toronto metropolitan areas, Canada. The results show that after controlling for socio-demographic background variables, teachers ’ discriminatory attitudes and psychological isolation contribute to the prediction of risk for immigrant children’s self-esteem, social competence, and academic performance. Inclusive school environment has a significant effect on social com...
Canadian federal policy provides a framework for the immigration and health experiences of immigr... more Canadian federal policy provides a framework for the immigration and health experiences of immigrant women. The official immigration category under which a migrant is admitted de-termines to what degree her right to remain in the country (immigration status) is precarious. Women immigrants fall primarily into the more dependent categories and they experience barriers to access to health services arising from this precarious status. Federal immigration and health policies create direct barriers to health through regulation of immigrants ’ access to services as well as unintended secondary barriers. These direct and secondary policy barriers intersect with each other and with socio-cultural barriers arising from the migrant’s socio-economic and ethno-cultural background to undermine equitable access to health for immi-grant women living in Canada.

In qualitative research, interviewing is a common method for obtaining rich data and participants’ points of view. Gathering and presenting all perspectives when interviewing vulnerable migrant women on health-seeking behaviors is challenging. In this article, we explore the process of developing and implementing a data collection plan and an interview guide for a study carried out with migrant women to explore the inhibitors/facilitators for following through on professional referrals for postbirth care. Adaptability and careful attention to multiple factors throughout the process are essential to maximizing participation and enhancing the trustworthiness of the data. Appropriate health policy and care delivery can only originate from health research with diverse mig...

During the last decade, empirical attention has been given to ethnoracial group variations vis-a-vis the nature, extent, and definitions of the problem, women's help-seeking, and service needs. Applying an intersectional framework, in this paper we suggest that these efforts are largely based on an approach that views ethnicity and "race" as static and immutable entities; heterogeneity within groups goes unrecognized, as do interactive elements of social location. The paper commences with a synopsis of intersectionality. Through this lens, we examine dominant North American scholarship on violence related to ethnoracial minority women in intimate relations. We look critically at the assumptions about ethnicity and "race" that permeate this scholarship. The paper concludes by considering how an inters...

This paper describes the research project, its results, the policy implications and the dissemination of findings. The paper offers an overview of the UN Protocol and critically analyses Canada’s efforts in the three key areas of the Protocol: prevention of human trafficking, protection of trafficking victims and the prosecution of traffickers. Since the beginning of our research, progress has been made in Canadian policy responses. The government began by developing and implementing its tools for the prosecution of traffickers, thereby satisfying most of the prosecution requirements of the UN Protocol. Different government agencies are also coordinating their efforts to implement prevention projects, both in source countries and at home, includin...
