Gareth James
I completed a PhD at Exeter University in 2011, having also studied for a BA and MA in English and Film there from 2003 to 2007.
My research focused on the fields of American television studies, media history, and American independent cinema.
My PhD thesis provided a revised institutional history of HBO. The thesis particularly expanded on earlier periods of HBO's history and programming strategies to better inform current debates over branding and quality television.
I have published a book chapter on Torchwood and its relationship to the branding of BBC America, as well as a chapter on HBO and the Western. Other publications include contributions to the Directory of World Cinema: American Independent II and Directory of World Cinema: Scotland. I have a forthcoming publication on the theme park productions of Clive Barker.
My research interests broadly include the aesthetics and the industrial strategies and histories of American and British television, as well as the history of American independent cinema. I'm also interested in film marketing and exhibition.
Since 2011 I have moved away from academia, and have worked as a freelance copywriter and occasional lecturer. I now work as a Marketing and PR Officer for a software engineering company, although I still manage to keep up with watching a lot of film and television.

As the thesis was researched and written between 2007 and 2011, its historical scope only goes up to 2007, with some mention of later series. It doesn't cover Game of Thrones or other recent HBO series, but I'm happy that certain trends identified in the thesis are still going strong.
Feel free to contact me for questions about the thesis.
Talks by Gareth James
Looking at 'disappeared' 2004 HBO film 'Strip Search', this paper speculates on its long-term marginalization, from issues of corporate censorship after 9/11 to some deeper problems with effective formats and the excesses of US paranoid cinema as a mode of generic practice.
