In this work, the evolutionary roots of human self-consciousness and morality are analyzed in a general way, although from a triple perspective: phylogenetic, ontogenetic and also from the perspective of cultural evolution. From this perspective, the evolution of a competitive mind, the property of our most remote ancestors and other higher primates, is reflected towards a cooperative mind, the property of Pleistocene hominids and is characterized by socio-cultural niches. The role of self-consciousness and moral behavior allows the evolution towards highly cooperative and solidary societies. With the first permanent settlements and the first proto-historical societies that model seems to move back towards a new competitive mind, characterized by a strong hierarchy and domination, and a process of moral disconnection that lasts until our days. In this cultural transformation, the role of social identity and also of one's experiences in terms of structures or cognitive patterns of knowledge, through which the individual is given a processing of the social information. The moral schemes are not an exception. That moral identity can be decisive when interpreting the different processes that allow the moral disconnection and the selfish behavior and the hypercompetitive that seems to be in the moment of responding.
Key words: morality, phylogenetic niche vs ontogenetic niche, competitive mind vs cooperative mind, moral disconnection, moral identity.
