Students come from homes with few resources, and the population is culturally and linguistically diverse and has many language learners. I chose to study the school because I knew it had a mathematics department that worked collaboratively to combat inequities among students. In a four-year, longitudinal study of approximately seven hundred students as they progressed through Railside and two other, more suburban schools, we found that the students at Railside learned more mathematics than the other students, were more positive about mathematics, and took more mathematics courses. In their senior year 41 percent of Railside students were taking calculus, compared to around 27 percent of students in the other two schools. The mathematics teachers at Railside achieved some important things: They gave students from disadvantaged backgrounds a great chance of success in life, and they taught them to love mathematics and to include it as part of their futures.
