The aim of this article is to show the importance of the early care-giving relationships, its inf... more The aim of this article is to show the importance of the early care-giving relationships, its influences in the human development and in the origin of psycopathology. Also, the relevance of the quality of these relations for the promotion of the physical and mental health of the community and for the later prevention of psycopathology is emphasized. The origins of the Bowlby’s Theory are reviewed, the theoretical and empirical foundations in which it sustains and the main concepts that must be handled for its understanding. Next, research findings about the relation between the type of infantile maternal bond and the psychological development in childhood, adolescence and mature are synthesized. Finally, a section is exposed on the psycopathological consequences that have been associated with the presence of insecure bonds in childhood.
