For we do so in a country which attempts to make a super-identity out of all the identities imported by its constituent immigrants; and we do so at a time when rapidly increasing mechanization threatens these essentially agrarian and patrician identities in their lands of origin as well. The study of identity, then, becomes as strategic in our time as the study of sexuality was in Freud's time. [Erikson 1963:282]
