Sulfones and carboxylic acids are prominent motifs widely present in the chemical structure of ag... more Sulfones and carboxylic acids are prominent motifs widely present in the chemical structure of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and many other highly valuable compounds. Herein, we describe a conjunctive strategy for the precise installation of these functionalities onto styrenes using sodium sulfinates and CO2 as coupling partners. The protocol allowed the preparation of carboxy‐sulfonylated compounds in good yields and broad functional group tolerance. Additionally, taking advantage of the leaving group ability of the sulfone moiety, a one‐pot photocatalytic carboxy‐sulfonylation‐elimination strategy was developed for the synthesis of α‐aryl‐acrylates.

The key step in the chemoenzymatic synthesis of apremilast was to produce the chiral alcohol (R)-... more The key step in the chemoenzymatic synthesis of apremilast was to produce the chiral alcohol (R)-1-(3-ethoxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(methylsulfonyl)ethanol, (R)-3. Two enzymatic approaches were evaluated to obtain (R)-3, one using ketoreductases and the other lipases. Bioreduction of 1-(3-ethoxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(methylsulfonyl)ethanone (2), using ketoreductase KRED‑P2-D12, led to (R)-3 with 48% conversion and 93% enantiomeric excess (ee). Kinetic resolution of rac-1-(3-ethoxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(methylsulfonyl)ethyl acetate (rac-4), via hydrolysis reaction, with 20% of n-butanol, catalyzed by lipase from Aspergillus niger yielded (R)-3 with > 99% ee, 50% conversion and E-value (enantiomeric ratio) > 200. The reaction between enantiomerically pure (R)-3 and 4-acetylamino-isoindol-1,3-dione (8) afforded apremilast in 65% yield and 67% ee.
241 Background: Data showed 46 modifications to breast imaging orders upon patient arrival to the... more 241 Background: Data showed 46 modifications to breast imaging orders upon patient arrival to the Radiology Department, in a 4 month period (Sept-Dec 2014.) Upon further investigation, we found that patients were arriving in radiology, scheduled for exams for which the laterality needed to be modified prior to the exam. (The most frequent occurrence was a patient with a history of a unilateral mastectomy, arriving in radiology for a bilateral mammogram.) These laterality order errors were traced back to either the referring LIP requesting the exam, or to the referring office’s clerical staff transcribing the order. The ordering errors came from many different referring services. Methods: Our objective was to develop Clinical Decision Support in our Clinical Information System (CIS,) to offer an upfront alert of a potentially incorrect laterality when a user was entering or transcribing an order, prompting the user to confirm that the correct exam had been ordered before scheduling t...
