We consider three different sources: (1) recent articles from the International Journal of Paleopathology; (2) press releases from Science Daily; and (3) news items from Forbes. We find that non-specialists are most intrigued by paleopathology news items that focus on past people’s lives and deaths, but particularly on those individuals who are deemed different, strange, or intriguing today. Further, in performing an issue frame analysis of the topic of violence in paleopathology news from Forbes, we find that readers were given information on past violence through the lenses of individualism and authority and encouraged to draw conclusions about the perpetrators and victims of violent actions. We conclude by suggesting more researchers should incorporate interdisciplinary methods and theory into their public outreach and by directing the reader to exceptional examples of current outreach.
