The students have to submit their written works, thesis or dissertation, together with a research article. However, many graduate students still have difficulties in writing. It is because this text has a special texture that has to be fulfilled. This texture is cohesive and coherent devices. In this study, the texture is analyzed in order to investigate the most dominant cohesive devices used, to explain the cohesion of the text, to investigate the types of thematic development, and to explain the coherence of English Education research articles written by postgraduate students of Universitas Negeri Semarang. In analyzing this texture of the text in the research articles, a qualitative case study in the form of discourse analysis approach is applied. Specifically, Halliday and Matthiessen’s frameworks (2014) are to analyze the cohesion of the texts, Eggin’s framework (2004) is to analyze the thematic development of the texts, and Thornbury’s framework (2005) and guidelines for English Education Journal of Universitas Negeri Semarang are to analyze the generic structure and coherent aspect of the text. Triangulating this study, the checklist for evaluating the process of a quantitative and a qualitative study from Creswell (2012) is used. The results show that demonstrative reference and repetition are the frequently used devices, cohesion of the research articles is good because the writers of these articles connect the ideas in the text by using cohesive devices, all the types of thematic development are employed, and coherence of the research articles is also in good category because the writers of those articles have followed the guidance of writing a research article. Every student in universities who wants to write a research article should pay attention to internal and external elements of research articles.
