Rekommendationerna publiceras senare under 2014 i Pure and Applied Chemistry, Vol 66 Nr 12.

Square-planar complexes are most common for metal ions having d 8 configuration, for example, Pt II , Pd II , Ni II , and Au III . The chapter focuses on the reactions of platinum(II). The difference between square-planar and octahedral complexes is not always clearcut, since square-planar complexes are known to form weak bonds with solvent molecules above and below the plane of the complex, and to this extent are six-coordinated. Magnetic susceptibility measurements are particularly useful in allowing a distinction to be made between such forms. The dependence of the rate of substitution of a ligand upon the nature of the group in the trans position is known as the trans-effect. The trans-effect indicates only the predominant and not the exclusive formation of an isomer. With some ligands, the halides, in particular, the correlation between polarizability and the trans-effect is good. The chapter also discusses the effect of varying the trans-directing group.

The substitution of tetrahedral compounds of carbon can proceed by SNl and SN2 mechanisms, although the latter are not of the limiting type in which five-coordinate intermediates are formed. With tetrahedral complexes of transition-metal ions, an increase in coordination number to five is also possible, substitution reactions being generally very rapid and difficult to study. With the synthesis of optically active organosilicon compounds of the general type R3SiX, where R3Si is, for example, the α-naphthylphenylmethyl group, it has been possible to demonstrate a high degree of stereospecificity in reactions in which X is replaced. With essentially nucleophilic reagents, reactions may be divided into two groups depending on the nature of the leaving group. The chapter discusses the hydrolysis of triarylgermyl halides. The solvolysis reactions of organotin compounds R3SnCl, where R is the ethyl, isopropyl, t-butyl or phenyl group, have been studied in ethanol, propan-2-ol and water dioxan solvents.
