While I typically do not reject such descriptions, the later generation's process of choosing a graph to transmit the Xia Clan arises questions. Apart from its principal meaning of 'summer' , 夏 xia is also the denomination of the first dynasty of Chinese history. When the Xia doesn't leave behind scripts but marks on pottery, they live in a space between myth and reality. Some scholars consider that the culture of the Xia is squeezed between that of Erlitou and Erligang. The geographical and archeological area that might define the Xia clan with their activity located at Erlitou 二 里头, however, differences among scholars are still in debate. Victor H. Mair in his 'Was There a Xia Dynasty?', concludes that nothing new happened from the article of 1938 by Herrlee Glessner Creel. There is no clear evidence that can be used against the actual existence of the Xia and is simply just a figment of 4th century BC 3 , as no specific graphs were used during the Shang and Zhou period that indicated an actual dynasty. On the contrary, in 'Erlitou Aesthetics and Making of a State with Influence: A Reassessment', Elizabeth Childs-Johnson , reconfirms her thesis that 'excavated Erlitou period jades were so refined and exquisite in carving technique and expression that they could only represent a 'royal tradition.' 4
