There is little analysis of how film and TV portray eating disorders nor the implications of this representation. This study fills that gap by comparing demographics of US film and TV characters since the 1980s to actual population demographics of people with eating disorders. Methods We compiled a dataset of TV and movie characters with eating disorders and categorized characters’ gender, age, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation. We narrowed the dataset to include only US media depictions to facilitate comparisons with empirical prevalence, resulting in a total of 66 characters over the period 1981 to 2022. We then compared the demographic characteristics of our sample to national statistics on eating disorder prevalence. Results US media depictions of eating disorders overrepresented characters who were heterosexual (75.56%), White (84.85%), women (89.39%), and und...

Malnutrition rates in Haiti are among the worst in the Latin America and Caribbean Region. Nearly one-third of all children under-five suffer from stunted growth and three quarters of children 6-24 months are anemic. Malnutrition takes a serious and irreversible toll, making children more susceptible to disease and death and compromising their cognitive and physical development, which results in low human capital and diminished lifetime earnings. Yet, scaling up ten key nutrition interventions in Haiti is estimated to cost only $46.5 million per year, which is less than 1percent of Haiti's total Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

It also reviews the existing programs and policies which aim to improve nutritional outcomes, considered the available evidence on the efficiency, effectiveness, targeting and inter-programmatic coherence of the programs and projects reviewed and suggests an agenda for policy discussions to improve these outcomes.

In contexts of crisis, conflict, disaster and displacement, children are at particular risk. Primary caregivers often have fewer resources and less time to provide children with attention and necessary socio-emotional and cognitive stimulation. Risk factors for children are often multiplied in crises and conflict settings, and access to services becomes more challenging where family and social networks have been weakened and social service delivery interrupted. To address the needs of young children, we must strengthen humanitarian response. Practitioners often use humanitarian standards and guidance to systematise planning, implementation and evaluation of programming. These documents describe the broad principles and essential elements (i.e. specific benchmarks and actions) for high-quality response, reflecting best practices at a global l...

Its 'how to' focused has been crafted in response to practitioners demand for first-hand country program experience on practical 'nuts and bolts' topics. The target audience for safety nets how to includes policy makers and practitioners in national and sub-national governments, donor, and international organizations, and non-governmental organizations, particularly those working in low-income countries where a new wave of social protection interventions has appeared in recent years. The information aims to complement existing knowledge in the sector, which mostly focuses on program design. In addition to safety nets how to, readers are encourage to explore the extensive literature on such critical design topics as types of safety net interventions, targeting, and setting benefit level.
