I explore how 11:7 has been received over the centuries, including how it has been perceived to fit into 1 Cor 11:2–16 and what it has been deemed to communicate regarding the relation of man to woman, woman to man, and both to God. I demonstrate the interpretive difficulties of the passage by surveying the views of six interpreters. In the end, I find all six to be insufficient and opt instead to affirm Paul’s radical vision for a new humanity.

I suggest that on the one hand, we should be cautious about attempting to locate the ‘essence’ of the imago Dei in a person or a community, and on the other, we should resist being overly prescriptive in how we interpret the biblical data. This poses obvious difficulties for scholars whose stock in trade is detail. Unfortunately, however, there are multiple examples of how a detailed and/or overly specific definition of the imago Dei is problematic. The deepest problem that we encounter with many ‘definitions’ of the imago Dei is that they are so often exclusionary, either of people born a certain way, or of people existing in certain conditions. Hence, the first irony is that a doctrine that in some way refers to the whole of humanity is articulated in a way that excludes some. The second irony is that in pursuit of precision and clarity, any sense of illumination on the issue is often obscured. Here I give a brief overview of various accounts of the imago Dei before turning to two specific accounts in Augustine and Barth with reference to the imago as ‘male and female.’ These two accounts exemplify where specificity distorts a clearer vision. I conclude by offering an account of washing and cleansing as one lens among others through which to understand the imago Dei. I argue that washing and cleansing is a rich sign that communicates the worth and dignity of humanity before God and one another on a sacramental, metaphorical, and physical level.
