These were made between the 1650s and the 1950s by local goat keepers and sheep tenders who used the local transhumance trails. Inscriptions included dates, signatures, initials, family symbols, herd accountancies, pictographs, sacred symbols, dedications and greetings. This study analysed the climate factors that influenced the writing frequency through a dendroclimatological survey of the trees growing in the same area. The influence of climate on writing frequency is irregular, as there appear to be interspersed periods when other factors of social or political nature become predominant. Comparison of writing frequency and tree ring series between 1639-2006 shows periods of correlations for spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), whereas no relationship exists with stone pine (Pinus cembra) or larch (Larix decidua). In general, mean summer and autumnal temperatures were the most influential climatic factors, suggesting that long warm seasons determined the greatest writing frequency.

The writings, dating from 1650 until about 1950, make use of alphabetic signs and numbers as a significant display of the shepherds’ acquired ability to read and write. In the inscriptions, two main styles are used. One can be called “lapidary,” and is derived from the graphic language of boundary stones and crosses. The other can be called “extemporaneous,” and it allows for the expression of individual feelings and attitudes. The two styles separate and differ in a way that calls for a more complex, dialectic approach to the interpretation of rock art.

Through the centuries the shepherds working in this area left thousands of inscriptions on the rock using red ochre. There are initials, family symbols, acronyms, dates, names, livestock tallies, portrayals of animals, greetings and short anecdotes. What is surprising is their ability to write before the first literacy schools in the valley were established. The resulting visual effect is that of a painted mountain, which looks like other rock art contexts of the Alps such as, for instance, Valcamonica in Lombardy or Monte Bego in France; but there the writings are engraved on the rocks. The ongoing historical-ethnographic and ethno-archaeological research on the rock art sites of Mount Cornón by the Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina aims to reveal the circumstances of pastoral life in the Fiemme valley o...
