The current energy transition towards Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is mainly driven in Belgium ... more The current energy transition towards Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is mainly driven in Belgium by intermittent sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic panels. Other sources are however available, such as biomass and geothermal resources. The latter can take various forms among which Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP). This Geothermal RES could be an important supply for the heating/cooling market, which represents 48% of the energy consumption in Belgium. The interest in using the ground as a source or storage device for thermal energy has grown considerably in the last few years and the market is expected to grow significantly by 2020 (Petitclerc, 2013). However, research in the thermal characteristics of the soil and subsoil is lagging behind the industrial technological development. Sizing errors of installations increasing the budget are therefore frequent and promising projects are abandoned. BeTemper was launched in 2014 for a period of 2 years. It aims to assess the sha...
SOCIAL REALITIES OF INCREASING (super-)diversity, mobility, and the corresponding high appraisal ... more SOCIAL REALITIES OF INCREASING (super-)diversity, mobility, and the corresponding high appraisal of linguistic competences and skills are currently not developing—as was expected—into egalitarian systems and structures in multilingual communities. To the contrary, much evidence of how former inequalities, prejudices, and social and linguistic hierarchies are still active and even amplified abounds in many apparently liberal societies. This paper focuses precisely on this issue, examining how various late-capitalist and postcolonial regimes recast new forms of diversity into old molds through the implementation of language-education policies and programs. In what follows we explore the main forces and processes that perpetuate inequality, some of which simply continue outdated dispensations while others present innovations even if still not bringing fundamental change. Particularly, we focus on the impact that neoliberal policies have in schools, the transnational division of labor and the persistence of knowledge, values, and ideologies rooted on the colonial past. The interplay of these processes and their impact on the recent proliferation of language programs, and on how diversity is recast, is substantiated in an illustrative section where we refer to three specific educational contexts which represent different national arrangements: South Africa, the United States, and Argentina. We consider different kinds of language programs, and examine different dimensions of the educational processes (from linguistic policies to local practices in classrooms) in these settings. Focusing on these three situations, this paper aims to develop an understanding of what the social, economic, organizational, and even epistemological conditions are that contribute to the perpetuation of inequalities.

The origin of a peculiar type of silicified limestone with nodular flints used in parish churches... more The origin of a peculiar type of silicified limestone with nodular flints used in parish churches at Sluizen and Vreren, south of Tongeren (province of Limburg, Belgium), has now been elucidated by the discovery of the same rock type in its natural setting, namely the silicified top of the Cretaceous which underlies Clay-with-flints (‘flint eluvium’) and Oligocene sands in a disused quarry at Elst, municipality of Riemst (Limburg, Belgium). Co-operation between professional geologists and amateur palaeontologists has allowed to characterise this rock type, here referred to as ‘Elst tauw’, both petrographically and palaeontologically. The rich echinoid fauna has also been assessed, on the basis of a comparison with assemblages from the Clay-with-flints at Halembaye (Haccourt/Lixhe, province of Liège, Belgium) and at Zichen-Eben Emael in the Hesbaye region. P.J. Felder's ecozones, based on bioclast assemblages, substantiated by analyses of petrographical biofacies features of the ...
Spatio-temporal ground-movement measurements and mappings have been carried out in the Campine co... more Spatio-temporal ground-movement measurements and mappings have been carried out in the Campine coalfield in Belgian Limburg since the closure of the mines to document post-mining effects. MT-InSAR measurements are compared to groundwater head changes in the overburden and to height data from the closest GNSS stations. Radar interferometry is used to estimate the extension and the velocity of ground movements. In particular, the MT-InSAR technique has been applied to SAR acquisitions of the satellites ERS-1/2 (1991–2005), ENVISAT (2003–2010), COSMO-SkyMed (2011–2014), and Sentinel-1A (2014–2022). The images were processed and used to highlight a switch from subsidence to uplift conditions in the western part of the coal basin, while the eastern part had already been affected by a rebound since the beginning of the ERS-1/2 acquisitions. Following the closure of the last active colliery of Zolder in 1992 and the subsequent cease of mine-water pumping, a recharge of mine-water aquifers ...
