Le tigré, langue éthio-sémitique (ici Ethio-Eritrean Semitic), est, après le tigrinya, la deuxièm... more Le tigré, langue éthio-sémitique (ici Ethio-Eritrean Semitic), est, après le tigrinya, la deuxième langue nationale la plus parlée de l'État d'Érythrée, elle est aussi la langue maternelle de citoyens soudanais de l'est du Soudan. Jusqu'à ce jour, les études sur la langue tigré se sont attachées à décrire une variété précise, avec parfois de brèves incursions dans un autre dialecte à des fins de comparaison. Cet ouvrage, qui reproduit la thèse de Ph.D. de Saleh Mahmud Idris (S.M.I.), constitue donc une première, puisqu'il propose une étude comparative portant sur l'ensemble du tigré, en y incluant des dialectes peu ou pas documentés, dont le parler connu depuis peu 1 sous le nom de dahālik (dahālək ici), endémique aux îles Dahlak. Son objectif n'est pas d'établir une description dialectologique mais bien plutôt, à partir d'enquêtes de terrain en Érythrée, de relever dans le lexique, la phonologie, la morphologie et la syntaxe, les caractéristiques et les traits qui permettent d'identifier, de différencier et de regrouper les différents dialectes du tigré (p. 13). L'enquête a été menée dans vingt localités disséminées sur l'aire tigré (carte p.7), elle a permis de revoir le premier découpage en trois groupes dialectaux, basé sur une liste lexicale de 327 items relevée en cinq endroits différents (carte p. 34). En prenant en compte un plus grand nombre de dialectes et tous les domaines de la langue, les isoglosses définissent cinq blocs dialectaux (carte p. 216). Dans l'introduction (p. 1-15), après une brève présentation de la langue, de son histoire et de ses locuteurs, l'auteur aborde la méthodologie appliquée lors des enquêtes auprès des locuteurs natifs. Il est intéressant de relever que les données ont été essentiellement obtenues par élicitation, soit à partir de questionnaires pré-établis, constitués de listes lexicale et grammaticale, soit en faisant traduire à des enseignants tigréphones de la région de courtes phrases à partir de l'arabe, du tigrinya ou même de l'anglais. Quant aux seuls énoncés spontanés, les textes, le chercheur y a parfois eu accès de façon indirecte, certains enregistrements ayant été faits par un intermédiaire, en son absence (p. 6). Les points d'enquête sont localisés sur une carte (p. 7) où ils sont répartis sur deux zones « Tigré » et « Tigré et autre ». Malheureusement, les détails d'ordre géographique, sociolinguistique et culturel, fournis pour chaque région explorée (p. 8-13), n'éclairent pas toujours sur les véritables conditions d'enquête et sur les locuteurs eux-mêmes. L'ouvrage comprend sept chapitres, une bibliographie, une liste lexicale en appendice et un résumé en allemand. Le chapitre 1 Literature review (p. 16-37) est une extension de l'introduction. Après avoir essayé de distinguer entre dialecte et variété, l'auteur fait une revue critique des ouvrages scientifiques de référence qui, depuis le XIXe siècle, servent de base à l'étude de la variation dialectale en tigré (p. 17-30). S.M.I., qui occupe un poste de responsabilité au sein du Curriculum Branch au ministère de l'Éducation érythréen, nous fournit ici de précieux renseignements sur la politique de développement des langues nationales qui a permis, entre autres, l'élaboration en Érythrée d'un riche matériel pédagogique et scolaire, comme en témoignent les 85 titres répertoriés pour le tigré dans la bibliographie (p. 222-226). 1 Jusqu'à présent seuls deux chercheurs ont travaillé sur ce parler : S.M.I. et l'auteure de ce compte rendu.

La region s'est considerablement ouverte et le paysage linguistique en a ete profondement transforme depuis la derniere mission sur le terrain. j'ai pu relever de nouveaux phenomenes dus a des contacts de langues qui se sont intensifies avec differentes varietes d'arabe et les autres langues sudarabiques. Les donnees recueillies sur le hobyot (a la fois dans la montagne a la frontiere avec Oman et dans les deux villages cotiers) m'ont permis d'observer des traits caracteristiques du parler des locuteurs d'ascendance africaine, qui ne peuvent s'expliquer que par un substrat non semitique.
