All these factors appear to be important when people are applying for a job or considering staying in a job until or beyond retirement age. The survey also identified a number of sector differences in factors affecting social climate. The ageing workforce means it is becoming more important in the Netherlands, as it is everywhere, to be an active member of the workforce and to stay in a job until or even beyond retirement age. The social climate in the workplace therefore is an important factor in applying for a job and the willingness to stay in a job until (and beyond) retirement age (65 years at the moment in the Netherlands).

Ybema & M. Bakhuys Roozeboom, Gedrag & Organisatie, volume 22, November 2009, nr. 4, pp. 354-370. A longitudinal study with three yearly waves of data collection among 1.013 employees was used to examine whether employers' health policy improved dedication of employees. Furthermore, it was examined whether health policy improved autonomy, social support (from supervisor, from colleagues), and organizational justice (procedural, distributive), and whether health policy affects dedication through these job resources. The results showed that health policy at T1 contributed to higher dedication at T3, corrected for dedication at T1. Moreover, health policy did not improve autonomy, but it led to more social support from supervisor and colleagues and to more procedural and distributive justice at T2, corrected for these job resources at T1. The effects of health poli...

Implementation of these provisions differs from one country to another and their practical application varies according to sector, category of worker and size of enterprise. The increasing importance of ‘emerging’ risks, such as stress, violence and harassment, poses a challenge for policy makers in their development of effective prevention measures.

The aim of this study was to provide answers to questions concerning OSH risk management, and in particular psychosocial risk management: (1) Is exposure to OSH risks, both in general and more specifically in relation to environmental risks, risks of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and psychosocial risks (PSRs), as reported by employees, related to risk awareness and risk management in enterprises? (2) Are work-related health outcomes and well-being, as reported by employees, related to risk awareness and risk management in enterprises? (3) How well is risk management explained by exposure to work-related risks, both general and specific, and by work-related health outcomes, as reported by employees? Do drivers, such as management commitment and employee participation, or barriers, such as lack of resources or expertise, ex...

Determinants of registered long-term sickness absence; differences between a prospective and a retrospective design. This study examines the differences in the determinants of registered long-term sickness absence when using prospectively or retrospectively gathered absence data. Two databases, the long-term sickness absence registration of the Dutch Workers Insurance Authority (UWV) and data from the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (NWCS) 2005 and 2006 were both prospectively and retrospectively linked together. Using two regression analyses we examined the relations between personal characteristics, job characteristics, working conditions, health and retrospectively and prospectively gathered data on long-term sickness absence. The underlying question is whether these relations differ between prospective and retrospective analyses. Personal characteristics, jo...

Bakhuys Roozeboom, E.M.M. de Vroome & P.G.W. Smulders, Gedrag & Organisatie, volume 23, September 2010, nr. 3, pp. 175-193. The present study was designed to map the causal relationships between non-standard working hours and work-home interference (WHI) and home-work interference (HWI). To this purpose, a longitudinal full-panel design was employed. Using such a design, we examined both the causal effects of non-standard working hours on WHI /HWI and the causal effects of WHI /HWI on non-standard working hours. We also investigated the moderating effect of gender in these relationships. Data were collected in two waves (2002 and 2004) among 337 Dutch employees and self-employed persons who lived together with a partner and had at least one child living in the household. We included evening work and...

This study investigates whether IM is effectively used within the occupational safety and health domain as well. Specifically, this study explores the relation between the fidelity regarding the use of the IM protocol for intervention development, the implementation process and the effectiveness of the occupational risk prevention and health promotion interventions. Methods: A systematic review was conducted including articles on development, implementation, and effects of occupational risk prevention and health promotion interventions that were developed according to the IM-protocol. By means of a checklist, two authors reviewed the articles and rated them on several indicators regarding the fidelity of the IM-protocol, the implementation process, and the intervention effect. Results: A literature search resulted in a total of 12 interventions...

The present study aims to investigate the effects of a participatory organizational level work stress prevention approach to reduce (quantitative) job demands, increase resources (i.e. autonomy, supervisor and coworker support) and to reduce work stress and increase job satisfaction of employees in primary education. Methods This study makes use of a multiple case study research design. The stress prevention approach is implemented at 5 primary schools and questionnaires were filled out by 119 employees of the 5 schools at baseline and 1 year later, measuring job demands, resources, work stress, job satisfaction and implementation factors. Results Multilevel analyses showed a significant decrease in job demands and a significant increase in job satisfaction between baseline and follow up. In addition, employees that were more satisfied with the communication about the intervention showed ...

Serious games have been proposed as an engaging self-directed learning tool for complex skills. The objective of this study was to compare the cognitive skills and motivation of medical residents who only used a course manual as preparation for classroom training on emergency care with residents who used an additional serious game. This was a quasi-experimental study with residents preparing for a rotation in the emergency department. The "reading" group received a course manual before classroom training; the "reading and game" group received this manual plus the game as preparation for the same training. Emergency skills were assessed before training (with residents who agreed to participate in an extra pretraining assessment), using validated competency scales and a global performance scale. We also measured motivation. All groups had comparable important characteristics (eg, expe...

The aim of this evaluation model is to measure the effectiveness of serious games in a practical way. GEM contains the methodology and indicators to be measured in validation research. Measuring generic learning and design indicators makes it possible to apply GEM on multiple games. Results provide insight in the reasons why serious games are effective. This evidence will help serious gaming designers to improve their games. Three empirical studies based on various serious games applied in different contexts show how GEM can be practically used and how these studies have contributed to the improvement of GEM.
