Microgrids (MGs) are attractive energy systems because they offer the reliable integration of DGs into the utility grid. An MG-based approach uses a self-sustained system that can operate in a grid-tied mode under normal conditions, as well as in an islanded mode when grid disturbance occurs. Islanding detection is essential; islanding may injure utility operators and disturb electricity generation and supply because of unsynchronized re-closure. In MGs, an energy management system (EMS) is essential for the optimal use of DGs in intelligent, sustainable, reliable, and integrated ways. In this comprehensive review, the classification of different operating modes of MGs, islanding detection techniques (IDTs), and EMSs are presented and discussed. This review shows that the existing IDTs and EMSs can be used when oper...

Using such language models to predict personal data entities, in place of redacted spans in text, could help generate synthetic datasets. In order to address privacy and ethical concerns with such datasets, we need to ensure that the masked entity predictions are also fair and controlled by application specific constraints. We introduce new ways to inject hard constraints and knowledge into the language models that address such concerns and also improve performance on this task.

The increased use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) composites for critical infrastructures has created urgent need of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems to ensure smooth and safe operation of the critical infrastructures. Damage detection in FRP structures using embedded FBG sensors is a widely researched area in SHM field. However, maximum utilization of FBG sensors for monitoring delamination cracks in FRP composite components is not fully utilized due to many engineering challenges at application level and also limited understanding of decoding the data obtained from FBG sensors. This paper details an experimental investigation of delamination in a conical shape structure using embedded FBG sensors. In addition to experimentation a detailed finite element analysis was performed. It has been found that FBG sensors data, the reflected spectra of FBG sensors have provided a good assessment of the delamination growth. Moreover, FEA analysis has shown a similar trend to experimental observations.

Plant fibres in the form of fabric are the most convenient material for a reinforcement considering its good fibre distribution as well as easy to handle during composite fabrication. The selection of fabric criterion on top of fibre type is also essential to ensure its suitability as reinforcement. In this work, three types of fabrics were analysed for their characteristics. Fabrics were analysed in terms of their physical characteristics such as fabric density, weight, thickness, yarn size and yarn crimp. The analysis continued with the fibre density and cloth cover factor determination which are related with the resin penetration. Tensile property characterisation was also done on the fabric which is important to predict their contribution on the composite materials. Fabric characteristics are important to be determined as we need to decide which fabric is more suitable as reinforcement and could giv...

To demonstrate, during the tendering stage, the two main concerns for project promoters are ensuring a certain level of profit margin, and making the financial proposal as attractive as possible to the client. Hence, from the project promoter's point of view, a state of optimality exists between selections of the right combination of key financial factors with appropriate values. Prior research in this area is limited, and has only partially addressed this optimization issue in a fragmented fashion. This paper provides a novel approach by integrating the leading financial elements pertaining to capital budgeting and project financing aspects, which in turn ensures optimum financial viability to promoters. Optimality equations and constraints, based on discounted cash flow analysis are developed, and the...

This property is called shape memory effect (SME). The SME has underpinned its usefulness of SMPs in delicate minimally invasive surgeries (MIS’s) such as vascular stents, clot removals etc. The invasive biodegradable SMP devices can avoid second surgery and have a great potential over any conventional metallic biomedical device. The ability to change triggering temperature to use in a broader range of temperatures while keeping SME is another superior capability of SMPs. Additionally, SMPs have shown a good prospective due to their special characteristics such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, low rejection by host and low density. However, intrinsic low stiffness, strength and recovery stress possess a significant limitation...

A number of applications and services have been proposed for HAP based communications which advance HAP over terrestrial and satellite infrastructure for future communications. Providing high speed multimedia mobile communications through HAPs to the users of Third Generation (3G) holds strong position using one of the proposed band, 2GHz. In this study we investigated how to improve the performance of 3G serving from HAP over a territory having suburban characteristics. Two proposed channel models, free space loss and shadowing loss, has been used to analyze the performance of HAP systems at 2GHz frequency band for suburban regions. Three different parameters namely antenna bore point, HAP antenna roll off factor and user antenna roll off factor have proposed to improve the performance of HAP systems while considering suburban regions. Repairs, comprising a composite shell assembled around the pipe with a small gap, which is then infilled with grout, are considered a suitable option for corroded pipelines. This paper presents the investigation on the mechanical (compression, tension) properties and glass transition temperatures of two infill grouts, after 1000 hour of hot/wet conditioning. An extended investigation on the moisture absorption behaviour was also carried out, revealing the highest absorption to be about 6% after 2520 hours of immersion. The glass transition temperatures of the grouts are reduced by approximately 20oC. The results suggest that the grouts underwent significant reduction of strength and stiffness due to hot/wet conditioning when tested at an elevated temperature, compared to room temperature. This reduced strength and stiffness is the result of the gr...
Aspect level sentiment classification (ALSC) is a difficult problem with state of the art models ... more Aspect level sentiment classification (ALSC) is a difficult problem with state of the art models showing less than 80% macro-F1 score on benchmark datasets. Existing models do not incorporate information on aspect-aspect relations in knowledge graphs (KGs), e.g. DBpedia. Two main challenges stem from inaccurate disambiguation of aspects to KG entities, and inability to learn aspect representations from the large KGs in a joint training with ALSC models. We propose a two-level global-local entity embedding scheme which allows efficient joint training of KG based aspect embeddings and ALSC models. A novel incorrect disambiguation detection technique addresses the problem of inaccuracy in aspect disambiguation. The proposed methods show a consistent improvement of 2.5− 4.1 percentage points, over the recent BERT-based baselines.

Inherent flaws within natural fibres in terms of their constituent contents (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin) reduce the compatibility of these fibres with polymer matrices. In this study, the effects of chemical treatments on hemp fibres and the resulted polyester matrix composite are investigated. The fibres were treated with alkali (0–10% NaOH), acetyl, and silane chemicals. Long unidirectional fibre composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding (VARTM) process. Thermal properties of the fibres were tested using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The mechanical properties of the composite samples were tested using compression and bending tests. Failure analysis of tested composites was undertaken through Optical Microscope (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results showed that the treatment...

This assembling of a large number of people also gives rise to the formation of a society and in this society, like all other societies, there are relations between workers and workers, workers and supervisors and host of other social relations. But most writers on the subject of industrial relations would, however, tend to agree on one point, that is, not all social relations in industry are industrial relations in the true sense of the term. Such a vast variety of routine personal inter actions such as the conversation between workers and workers, workers and managers, allocation of work by supervisor to workers or a gossip between workers and union representatives during a tea break are so trivial and insignificant that they will hardly be considered as a part of industrial relations.
