This disease highlighted the limitations of health systems worldwide regarding managing the pandemic. In particular, the lack of diagnostic tests that can quickly and reliably detect infected patients has contributed to the spread of the virus. Reverse Transcriptase—Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and antigen tests, which are the main diagnostic tests for COVID-19, showed their limitations during the pandemic. In fact, RT-PCR requires several hours to provide a diagnosis and is not properly accurate, thus generating a high number of false negatives. Unlike RT-PCR, antigen tests provide rapid diagnosis but are less accurate in detecting COVID-19 positive patients. Medical imaging is an alternative diagnostic test for COVID-19. In particular, chest computed tomography allows detecting lung infections related to the disease with high accuracy. However, visual analys...

The difficulty of managing the huge amounts of data currently available to researchers and the need to have results within a reasonable time have led to the use of distributed and parallel computing infrastructures for their analysis. Recently, bioinformatics is exploring new approaches based on the use of hardware accelerators as GPUs. From an architectural perspective, GPUs are very different from traditional CPUs. Indeed, the latter are devices composed of few cores with lots of cache memory able to handle a few software threads at a time. Conversely, the former are devices equipped with hundreds of cores able to handle thousands of threads simultaneously, so that a very high level of parallelism can be reached. Use of GPUs over the last years has resulted in significant increases in the performance of cert...

The system is built upon PACMAS, a generic architecture that supports the implementation of Personalized, Adaptive, and Cooperative MultiAgent Systems. Preliminary tests have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in retrieving and classifying newspaper articles. Results show an avarage accuracy of ...

This paper presents a multiagent system aimed at creating personalized press reviews from online newspapers by progressively filtering information that flows from sources to the end user, so that only relevant articles are retained. First, newspaper articles are classified according to a high-level taxonomy that does not ...

Information is filtered and organized according to personal interests explicitly stated by the user. User profiles are improved and refined throughout time by suitable adaptation techniques. The overall architecture has been called PACMAS, being a support for implementing Personalized, Adaptive, and Cooperative MultiAgent Systems. PACMAS ...
