Este artículo contiene principalmente cuatro puntos: Unas consideraciones de valor universal, aun... more Este artículo contiene principalmente cuatro puntos: Unas consideraciones de valor universal, aunque centradas en ejemplos vascos, acerca del proceso natural de formación de los topónimos, considerados como la fosilización de sintagmas de la lengua ordinarios en su origen. Un esquema general de todas las combinaciones morfológicas posibles en un topónimo vasco y una clasificación semántica de sus posibles elementos. Una estimación de lo que el estudio de los topónimos puede aportar a la lingüística vasca, con atención especial a los límites que presentan los datos procedentes de esta fuente. Una propuesta de tratamiento informático que facilite el uso y la selección de los materiales toponímicos que suelen ser muy amplios.

The author argues, developing an idea proposed by French phoneticist Henri Gavel in the fifties, ... more The author argues, developing an idea proposed by French phoneticist Henri Gavel in the fifties, that the examination of the clearly Latin ancient toponymy of Upper Navarre suggests that the linguistic stratification usually proposed for the Middle Navarre (Navarra Media), an area where Basque was intensely spoken throughout the Middle Ages, should be reviewed and that in that area the Latin can be chronologically prior to the Basque, which would satisfactorily explain some unresolved knots of the linguistic history of the Basque Country and its surroundings.
The authors of the article analyse in full detail the philological and sociological bases of the ... more The authors of the article analyse in full detail the philological and sociological bases of the Nomenclator Euskerico de Navarra (a study and proposal for the standardization of the Basque forms of the navarrese place names by the Comision de Onomastica of the Basque Language Academy). The review concentrates on five questions: 1.- What should be considered a Basque Name? 2.- Does the ancient name of a place automatically become its Basque name? 3.- Should etymology be taken into account to standardise a place name's form? 4. - Should the written usage not be the main criteria? 5.- What should be considered a “castilianised form"? On these two aspects, different phonetic and morphological problems related to place names are discussed. As an answer to these questions, the authors propose a series of criteria which, in their oppinion, would be more consistent and appropriate than those behind the Academy's proposals.
