He taught science for ten years at private high schools. A graduate of Yale University, he did graduate work in physics and chemistry at Tufts University and the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn

He is chair emeritus of Student Pugwash USA, an organization devoted to the consideration of ethical issues in scientific and technical research. He was a pioneer in environmental education, sharing leadership of an EE program in the late 1960s. He has written extensively on science policy and public understanding of science issues. His research interests focus on the intersection between science and technology and social issues, including ethics, politics, and the economy.
