The findings revealed that all respondents viewed speaking important and they were willing to deal with the necessities to master it. Although they got interesting materials, empowering activities, and proper opportunity to practice speaking, they insisted to have longer time to practice. In addition, some respondents tended to avoid speaking due to their fear of lecturers' ‗scolding' and classmates' laughing. The paper concludes by suggesting the need to create a friendly and conducive environment in the classroom.

The qualitative study used focus group and personal interviews to get a comparative look at the meaning of learning from the cross-cultural perspectives of doctoral students from five Asian nations: Thailand, China, Korea, India, and Japan studying at a USA university. In addition to the students' ideas concerning learning, the study also asked of the participants to provide learning-related visual representations/metaphors and interpretations. The study questioned whether there are any universal or cultural aspects related to their ideas of learning and how the cross-cultural experience itself is related to learning. It is intended that this paper will inform teachers and faculty of the need to rethink learning in this age of globalization and take into account the significance of cross-cultural experiences when designing learning objectives. It is also intended to initiate further dialog among comparative educators, intercultural specialists, and policy-makers to reexamine global educational goals, the nature of learning in cross-cultural settings, and the limitations of school as a place of learning in the globalized world.

This study took place during the first level of Eng-lish in their academic program. Two groups of students were included in the study. One group received traditional reading instruction while the other group had structured reading lessons that intended to create opportunities to operate in higher order thinking levels. The gains in critical thinking skills were assessed on the basis of each group's comparative results on the California Critical Thinking Test (Facione, 1995) between the pre-test and post-test. Results showed that students who had structured reading lessons did not improve in a significant way compared to the results of the control group in the post-test.

The research aimed at the investigation of applying innovative techniques for written and oral communication in English classes. An exploratory study of using a variety of ICT activities at tertiary level was conducted. Class experiences of creating weblogs for learning purposes and using them for online activities with university students who learn English for Specific Purposes are described. The methods employed for data gathering and treatment consisted of administering specially designed questionnaires, analyzing students' responses, carrying out weblogging activities, providing feedback to learners and evaluating learners' performance in various online activities, and finally assessing the utility of weblogging. Our findings show that the experience of writing for an audience provides an important opportunity for learning English. Although there is a limitation to the study-the data are from a small sample of participants – this study yielded some practical insights and implications which are presented in this article.

However, it is not currently common practice in Turkey either to develop language teaching programmes based on the Common European Framework as a reference, or to introduce improvements in these programmes based on an evaluation of their effectiveness. This study aims to describe the process of developing a new teaching programme, taking CEF into consideration, at the Preparatory Programme at the School of Foreign Languages, Izmir University of Economics, and also to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme. 236 Freshman students and 48 faculty members from 5 different faculties participated in the study. The results indicated a significant relationship between students' proficiency scores and perception of their own competencies and a significant difference in perception of their own competence in terms of levels at the preparatory program. Although faculty members stated that Preparatory Program, in general, meets the needs of the students, students still have difficulty in practising some tasks requiring higher order thinking skills. The study suggests a series of learner training sessions to raise the awareness of the students, extending duration of the modules, reviewing the order of objectives in Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate, and working in cooperation with Faculties in order to increase awareness of mutual expectations.
