Our secondary aim was to remind the social service practices in emergency services and to describe the patient profile that frequently needed social service support. METHODS: Patients admitted to the pediatric emergency department between January 2010 and December 2018 were included in this descriptive and retrospective study. Age, gender, nationality, diagnosis at admission, consultations, reasons of social service consultation, problems determined by social service specialist and interventions were recorded via hospital information management system. RESULTS: Total number of patients consulted to social service during the study was 324. The mean age of the patient group was 11 ± 6 years, 206 (63.6%) were female, 118 (36.4%) were male; 283 (87.3%) were Turk, 41 (12.7%) were S...

The patient population consisted of 430 children (225 boys, mean age: 7.9±2.9 years; range: 2-14 years). At onset, purpura was present in all cases, arthritis/arthralgias in 195 (45.3%), abdominal involvement in 148 (34.4%), and renal involvement in 192 (44.7%). Purpura manifested after 24 hours of admittance in 64 patients (14.9%) (atypical cases). Multivariate analysis showed that female sex, atypical presentation and early corticosteroid treatment increased the risk of renal involvement (p<0.05). Recurrences, occurring in 22 (5.2%) patients, were correlated with early corticosteroid treatment (p<0.05). After a mean 17.3±2.9 months of follow-up, no patient had renal insufficiency. Female sex, atypical presentation and early corticosteroid treatment were considered to increase the risk of developing renal involvement,...

MATERIALS And METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed sociodemographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, and clinical outcomes of pediatric patients that underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation due to prehospital cardiac arrest at two pediatric emergency departments in Izmir Hospital of Health Sciences University and Gaziantep Cengiz Gökçek Kadın Doğum ve Çocuk Hospital of Health Ministry between August 2017 and August 2018. RESULTS: The present study included 188 patients (112 patients from Gaziantep and 76 patients from Izmir). All patients arrived at the hospital through emergency medical services. The median age was lower (14 days vs. 15 months; P < 0.001), and the proportion of Syrian refugees was higher in patients from Gaziantep (78.6% vs. 7.9%; P < 0,001). In both cent...

This study enrolled 139 patients ranging in age from 1 month to 4 years seen in the pediatric emergency observation room. The temperatures in the rectum and axilla were measured with a digital thermometer, and a non-contact infrared thermometer was used to measure the temperature of the skin over the lateral side of neck, jugular notch, forehead and the tympanic temperature. During the examination of each child, 17 temperatures were measured within 10 minutes, including six (three for each ear) tympanic and three infrared skin temperatures at each of the three sites, one axilla, and one rectal reading. Fever was defined as a rectal temperature ≥ 38°C, and 56 patients fulfilled this definition. All measurements were compared...

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the prevalence of respiratory viruses in children with LRTI symptoms. Material and Method: A total of 160 children who were diagnosed with LRTI between October 2009 and March 2010 were included in the study. The presence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (A+B), influenza virus (A+B), parainfluenza virus (PIV) (1, 2, 3, 4), human metapneumovirus, rhinovirus and coronavirus (OC43+229E) in throat swab samples were investigated by real-time PCR The RealAccurateTM Respiratory RT PCR Kit (PathoFinder B.V., Netherlands). Results: In 67 samples (41.8%), at least one virus which could cause acute respiratory tract infection was found. Overall, RSV was the most frequently identified virus (52.2%), followed by rhinovirus (26.8%), coronavirus (5%), metapneumovirus (2.9%) and PIV 1 (1.4%). As the other viral agents, coronavirus was detected in 4 samples (5%), hMPV w...
Introduction: this article examines a boy who was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at eight years ... more Introduction: this article examines a boy who was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at eight years old. Pediatricians and family physicians encountered difficulties during the diagnosis and treatment stages due to the fact that early onset of the disease is rare. Case report: a boy aged eight years and four months presented with bradicardia, malnutrition and dehydration as far away from the preliminary diagnosis of anorexia nervosa investigated for possible organic pathologies at the pediatric ward. Finally, he was diagnosed with early-onset anorexia nervosa and anxiety disorder based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5. Discussion: the case highlights two important points. First, this case report demonstrates a limited awareness of anorexia nervosa and of a psychosomatic or psychiatric origin of weight loss in children among physicians. Second, disrupted eating behaviors and mood changes may be predicting factors for the development of full-blown anorexia n...

Method: The cases who applied to the pediatric emergency department due to head trauma were examined prospectively. Glaskow Coma (GCS) and Pediatric Trauma Scores (PTS) were calculated. The patients were evaluated neurologically 6 months after they were discharged. Results: A total of 707 pediatric patients [mean age: 59.8 ± 42.6 months; range: 1 month to 13 years; 263 (37.2%) girls] were evaluated prospectively. Pathology was detected in 101 cases (45.9%) [(epidural hematoma, 14; subdural hematoma, 11; brain edema, 36; intracerebral hematoma, 6; subarachnoid hemorrhage, 8; cerebral contusion, 22. Methods: Between 29/03/2020 and 04/13/2020 a total of 1,332 students had been questioned in three Turkish speaking countries (Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). Results: The average age of the students were 20.1 ± 1.6. Among all 895 (67.7%) of them were female and 427 (32.3%) were male. 1020 (77.2%) of the studens were in Turkey, 195 (14.8%) were in Azerbaijan and 107 (8.1%) were in the TRNC. 104 of the students (7.9%) had a chronic disease. It was found that number of alcohol and cigarette users decreased significantly during the pandemic. (p <0.001, p <0.001). Anxiety levels of those who quit or reduced smoking were found to be higher than those who increased or did not change their amount of smoking (p=0.034). It was found that the most benefited sources were “their faculty lecturers” (n=453, 34.3%), “Worldomet...
