The purpose of this study was to clarify Chinese medicine constitution that influences sleep quality and fatigue among Chinese nurses engaged in shift work. Considering that these conditions might differ according to living environments, studies were conducted both in Japan and China. Data were gathered using the attributes of nurses, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to evaluate sleep quality, the Jikaku-sho shirabe to evaluate fatigue, and the Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire, which evaluates Chinese medicine constitution according to nine criteria. The survey was conducted via internet, with data analyzed from 100 Chinese subjects in Japan and 100 Chinese subjects in China. Increase in age, living in China, Qi-deficiency constitution and Blood-stasis constitution were causal factors for lower sleep quality. Sleep quality was significantly lower among nurses in China than those in Japan. T...

Japan’s remote outer islands, with their aging populations, harbor a unique culture, and it is believed that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on such populations in a distinct manner. This study aims to clarify the impacts of COVID-19 on families with older adults residing on remote islands, using the Concentric Sphere Family Environment Theory (CSFET) as a theoretical framework. We conducted family ethnographic research including semi-structured interviews with 14 families on Japanese islands whose total population numbers approximately 34,000, and performed directed content analysis of impacts on the families using CSFET. Forty-three categories were extracted according to the five systems of the CSFET. For example, negative impacts such as “occurrence of concerns over the scarcity of medical institutions” in the macro system; positive impac...

The purpose was to explore cultural values/beliefs related to culturally congruent health activities among older adults in forest communities. Method: The qualitative ethnonursing research method was used. Data were collected through fieldwork and key informants’ interviews ( n = 14) over 1 year. The setting was a traditional village with 80% forest cover. Results: Findings included two universal cultural values/beliefs, which were “community identity as a community member” and “our cohesion and connection as community members.” Additionally, two diverse cultural values/beliefs were found: “gender-based differences” and “differences between those having experience working outside the forest community and those without this experience.” These were related to community-based health activities. Discussion: These values/beliefs were suggested to develop a multilay...

Patients at 15 self-help groups and 14 hospitals were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. The questions’ basic attributes included sex, age, type of disease (Ulcerative Colitis (UC) or Crohn’s Disease (CD)), and presence of stoma. The questions also included conditions such as frequency of sexual activity, and sexuality satisfaction index “SEXSI-IBD (Sexuality Satisfaction Index for IBD),” and sexual perceptions. A total of 195 valid responses from IBD patients was obtained and subjected to analysis. With regard to the frequency of sexual activity in terms of the number of occasions of sexual intercourse, “approximately once or twice a month” was given as most frequent response, but overall, the largest number of responses indicated “no physical contact and no sexual intercourse” and “physical contact but no sexual intercourse.” In ...
