This qualitative study proposes a framework for preserving audio-visual records at South African broadcasting radio stations to ensure that records are safe and sound at all times if they are still needed. The study relied on the literature to investigate a framework for preserving audio-visual records to support accessibility for radio broadcasting stations in South Africa. The study discovered, based on the literature and challenges experienced, that the largest section of the radio broadcasting institution has no framework for preserving audio-visual records. This may be owing to a lack of preservation strategies and suitably qualified archivists to provide vision for implementing strategies. These strategies are implemented to preserve audio-visual records, which may result in records being undocumented and irretrievable. ...

Most countries around the world, including South Africa, have imposed national lockdowns. COVID-19 was declared a national disaster in South Africa in March 2020, in accordance with the Disaster Management Act, 2002. The Act, among other things, recognises the importance of having access to reliable disaster information, as well as information management and communication systems for storing, disseminating, and exchanging information. Additionally, in April 2020, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) issued a declaration calling for shared responsibility in preserving the documentary heritage that provides a historical perspective on how pandemics have been addressed in the past for future research. The declaration was supported by heritage organisations such as the International Council on Archives. This quantitative study used The UNESCO 2015 Recommendation Concerning...

The records are used by broadcasters to repeat and support programmes on air. The formats that carry these records such as tapes and compact discs are fragile and have a short life span. This is compounded by evolving technologies and results in obsolete playback equipment, which can result in records not being accessible. This study aims to explore the preservation and access of audio-visual records at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) radio in Limpopo regional offices. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative data were collected through interviews from purposively selected participants in three radio stations of the SABC in the Limpopo province which are Munghana Lonene FM, Phalaphala FM and Thobela FM. The interview data were augmented through participant observation. Findings The findings revealed that the SABC radio archive was pr...

Design/methodology/approach This study applied a qualitative case study, with data collected through interviews from a purposively selected sample of staff members who held managerial positions. Information in this study was partially extracted from the PhD thesis of Dr Tseole ET supervised by Prof Ngulube P at the University of South Africa completed in 2021. Findings The study discovered that a considerable amount of knowledge may have been lost because employees who either left the organisation or those who were apparently forced to resign during the process had left without any proper knowledge retention arrangements. Research limitations/implications The framework proposed in this study may be used in framing future studies as a theoretical framework. The study also provides new literature f...

Design/methodology/approach This qualitative case study used semi-structured interviews and document analysis to collect data from regulatory documents, records practitioners and chief information officers in the national government departments in South Africa. Findings This study reveals that despite the advent of cloud computing, government is still struggling with manual paper-based records challenges, as they have not developed a government-owned cloud in which to manage and dispose records. Practical implications Technological advancements have brought about dramatic changes to the management and disposition of records since cloud computing emerged. The traction gained by cloud computing influences how records are managed and disposed in the cloud storage. Currently, the South African Government manages and disposes records in the government premises a...

The medical and health records management functions and activities in the public hospitals are no exception. If medical and health records are managed without appropriate skills and competency, they become inaccessible/non-locatable, are damaged or stolen, go missing or are misfiled, altered and even falsified. This eventually results in a chaotic healthcare service or even an inability by healthcare providers to render healthcare services. This study sought to develop a framework that may be applied to map-out standard requirements for officials responsible for medical and health records management to ensure that they are sufficiently capacitated with skills and competencies to effectively support public healthcare service in the digital age in Limpopo public hospitals. Data was collected using a questionnaire, as well as observations and interviews. The study discov...

In most instances, trauma to HIV/AIDS patients accelerate because of their personal information relating to the state of illness leaks to public people. Design/methodology/approach This qualitative study used literature to study confidentiality and security of information at the public health-care facilities to curb HIV/AIDS trauma among patients in Africa. Findings The study revealed that confidentiality and security of information has been neglected, in most instances, at the health-care facilities, and this has, to some extent, affected HIV/AIDS patients negatively, leading to trauma, stigma and skipping of treatment by patients resulting in accelerated mortality among chronic patients. The study recommends that patients’ information be always strictly controlled and kept confidenti...

However, this service is not without challenges. For example, problems related to document delivery services may include unclaimed library materials by students, which costs the library money, and ‘return to sender’ parcels from the post office. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the provision of document delivery services in an ODeL environment with reference to the University of South Africa (UNISA). Data were collected through document analysis and interviews with purposively UNISA library staff working at the document delivery section. The findings indicated that UNISA library uses mail, courier and e-learning platforms for the provision of document delivery services. It was established that often, courier companies deliver parcels without contacting the students, which sometimes results in the parcel being received by the wrong recipient or returned to the university. It is concluded that even with the use of modern technology in document delivery services at UNISA, delivered documents still get lost. A framework for implementation of document delivery services that can speed up delivery and minimize loss of materials is suggested.

This qualitative study used an open-ended questionnaire to collect data from various senior professionals or researchers, specifically those with a PhD qualification, to gather information about their understanding or views relating to the application of the mixed-method approach. Purposive sampling was used to select participants from different journal issues publishing library and information science-related research works, nationally and across the globe. The study discovered that various researchers in social science research have different views and use different approaches when implementing the mixed-method approach. The study recommended a common approach to implementing mixed-method research by means of a framework as a guideline on what constitutes the mixed-method approach and how to implement the approach.

Artificial intelligence is a complex and emerging technology in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Therefore, it requires a robust research approach for one to come up with empirical and reliable results. The study relied on the literature review and the research experience of the researchers with the application of mixed-method research in studying the use of artificial intelligence for the management of records. The study discovered that applying a single approach in studying the use of artificial intelligence for the management of records may produce results with some gaps which may result in the study findings and recommendations being unreliable. Mixed-method research was found to be the most appropriate approach that may be applied in studying the use of artificial intelligence for the management of recor...

The manual modus operandi for the management of medical records in healthcare institutions brings about many discrepancies that regularly result in chaos in healthcare services, which always affects patients negatively. This study sought to investigate the application of an electronic system for the management of medical records in the Limpopo province of South Africa to support healthcare services. The study used a survey questionnaire to collect quantitative data from a sample of 306 (49%) out of a total of 622 records management officials. The response rate was 70.9 per cent (217), and system analysis and observation were applied to augment the quantitative data. Design/methodology/approach The study used qualitative approach to apply the literature in supporting the views about landscaping electronic system using functional patient’s records management activities.
