TOD is a solution to promote accessibility, and land use planning is part of TOD principles. This paper shares the outcome of a study that focuses on the interrelationship of land use and TOD and evaluates the core areas of two earlier-built transit stations before TOD was put forward in Malaysia. Thematic analysis was employed together with site investigations, and results demonstrated the essential requirement of integrating land use planning in TOD and the performance of two transit stations which embrace some of the critical principles of TOD.

This can be a similar definition of transit-oriented development: integrating land uses (mixed-use activities) and transportation systems to improve urban issues, especially traffic congestion. This paper aims to quantitatively assess the current transit nodes using the TOD index by evaluating the standard criteria of the 5Ds that determine TOD levels. The TOD index was calculated for areas of 69 stations on the LRT Ampang/Sri Petaling and LRT Kelana Jaya Lines. Some stations are indicated as having a potential TOD but a poor built environment and accessibility, depending on the TOD index's value. With these results, the recommendations to improve TOD planning and implementation can become effective for each station, d...

Little India was chosen as the case study because of its historical and cultural significance. The study aims to explore the most important temporary urban interventions - activity-based interventions in traditional shopping street through the spatial logic of street network. Static snapshots and people-following were conducted in Little India, to observe activity and movement during a whole day on a weekday and a weekend day. Two (2) parameters in Space Syntax were chosen including global integration and local integration to measure its urban interventions, activities, and movement among visitors in traditional shopping streets. The result indicates that there is a certain correlation among these parameters with the following...

This study also tries to measure the perception of the residents regarding the existing scenario of walking and cycling infrastructure facilities provided in their cities. The data used in the study was collected through a survey in three cities, namely-Shah Alam, Batu Pahat, and Putrajaya, as a representation of the main cities in Malaysia. The results produced suggested- the majority of the population was not ready to give up travelling via car and take up cycling and walking in lieu of it. The causes listed for "refusal" of reducing the car usage included hot weather, surrounding safety concerns and undesirable pedestrian and cycling infrastructure conditions. The research explored that attitude, lifestyle and high level of dependency on cars are crucial factors dictating the travel behaviour, which is the reason why residents refuse to shift to sustainable and environment friendly options of travel. The research also suggests that these three cities need to improve and uplift their walking and cycling infrastructure facilities, especially in terms of provision of cover and shade, connectivity, design and maintenance and cleanliness to motivate the urban residents to minimize usage of the cars and take up walking and cycling instead.

However, human factors are rarely incorporated in pedestrian crossing behaviour research. The objective of this research is to analyse the development of pedestrian crossing choice models on the basis of road traffic and human factors. For that purpose, a questionnaire was distributed to 663 respondents among pedestrians in the Shah Alam district. The respondents were asked to fill in a questionnaire about their travel motivations, ability characteristics, risk perceptions and preferences with respect to walking and road crossing, as well as their opinion on drivers, etc. From the modelling analysis, the results showed that there is a significant relationship between Human Factor and Crossing Behaviour; there ...

What emerges in most environmental settings is unshaped antispace. The essence of this research seeks to establish a better understanding towards the local perception of lost space in the urban core areas of Kuala Lumpur and identify the appropriate tools to improve the usability of the space. The research has been designed with the aim of seeking effective ways of designing a space in the urban core to minimize the undermanaged space. For this reason, the research focuses on the definitions and characteristics of lost space before the process of designing the space. A qualitative analysis is made on selected parameters in the theory of lost space by Trancik (1986); activities, accessibility, connectivity, maintenance and design aspect. Through a qualitative approach, the resul...

Thus, this research is crucial to understand the mental health challenges of urban population in Malaysia. The objective of this research is to examine the influence of urban planning on mental health, particularly the attributes of urban planning, density and land use, as well as their potential relation to psychological stress, depression and anxiety. The study was carried out at low-cost flats at Pantai Dalam in Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. Besides the secondary data collection and site observation, a survey in a form of questionnaire that used Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) was distributed. The findings showed that density and land use contributed to mental disorders. The research findings can be applied by government agencies, professionals and private sectors to pl...

Findings indicate that children living in the denser neighbourhood are significantly associated with independent mobility to school compare to children live in a low-density neighbourhood that reported the independent mobility has considerably decreased. Children's preferences for being driven coincide with parents' fears for children safety and concern their children's ability to travel independently in an unsafe neighbourhood environment besides the school profile.

In analysing the street networks in Space Syntax, the question arises; to what extent the movement and activity may explain street integration among gender-based pedestrians. The result found that there is a correlation between spatial configurative analyses and women present in the streets. In essence, the less integrated streets attract more women pedestrians and improve better quality of space. The research is relevant to spatial design interventions and policymaking to enhance gender equal access to public space.

The growth in construction activities in Malaysia since the 1980’s has given rise to the need for more statutory controls in obtaining permissions from the relevant authorities to initiate and to construct a facility and upon its completion to occupy and use the completed facility. The understanding of building plan process is important to understand whether the development follows the building regulations. Thus, the construction failures can be limited. Nevertheless, little is known about the effectiveness of building plan process in the local authority though the enhancement of mechanism delivery system of the process known as One Stop Centre (OSC) has been established. The study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of building plan approval process in Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ). Forty-seven (47) questionnaires survey has been distributed to r...
