The presidential office is so sensitive that it requires the conduct of proper elections into the office. Prior to the conduct of the 2015 presidential elections in Nigeria, elections conducted from 1999 post-independence have been assumed to be replete of electoral malpractices and anomalies. The 2015 presidential election was assumed to have been shelved from all electoral malpractices as a result of the use of the card reader machine by the Independent National Electoral Commission. This study examined the effectiveness of the card reader machine usage during the administration of the 2015 presidential elections as regards its impacts and the challenges that emerged from its use. Secondary mode of data collection was used in the collection of information through the review of relevant books, journals and online publications. It was found out that the card reader machine reduced electoral fraud to a very large extent and it reduced electoral litigation; a distinguishable characteristics of previous elections. Nevertheless, the card reader machine had some challenges which include its failure in the biometrics capture of electorates which led to the adoption of the manual mode for accreditation; a process which sustained electoral malpractice in previous elections. This study suggests that, for the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct elections that would be adjudged to be devoid of electoral malpractice then it must adopt electronic voting as a mode for conducting elections. Electoral materials to be used for the conduct of elections must be test-run in other to predict future challenges in order to make possible corrections.
