This study evaluated the physical activity level (PAL) of a sample ofelderly Nigerians and whether PAL is different in people with and without FOF, and also between fallers and non-fallers. The cross-sectional survey involved 180 elderly individual (92 females, 88 males) recruited from selected South-Eastern Nigerian communities, with a mean age of 71.87± 6.98. The Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) and the Fall EfficacyScale (FES) were used to assess the PAL and FOF among the participants. Information on falls was obtained via oral interview. Data was analysed using frequency and percentages, mean and standard deviation, chi-square, Independent t and Mann-Whitney U tests. Mean PASE score of 95.61, and FOF prevalence and fall prevalence rates of 34.4% and 27.8% was recorded among participants. Total PASE score was significantly higher for those without FOF than those with FOF overall but similar between fallers and non-fallers. Participants’ PAL was fairly good, though FOF and fall prevalence rates were high. Physical inactivity is associated with presence of FOF but not with actual falls. Improving physical activity among older adults may help minimize development of FOF and its consequences.

Such assessment requires instruments with proven reliability and validity. Purpose: To investigate and compare the intra-rater reliabilities and concurrent validity of the universal goniometer and tape measure in measuring cervical AROM. Methods: Cervical AROM in 100 consecutively sampled apparently healthy individuals was measured with both universal goniometer and tape measure and repeated after five days. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics, standard error of measurement, Pearson product moment correlation and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) at 0.05 level of significance. Results: Intra-rater reliability of the tape measure (r = 0.28–0.62; ICC = 0.44–0.75) and universal goniometer (r = 0.21–0.67; ICC = 0.34–0.79) were within the acceptable range except for right la...

The interplay among these constructs may vary between community-dwelling and assisted-living older adults. However, studies comparing the wellbeing of community-dwelling older adults with those residing in the assisted-living facilities (ALFs) are rather rare especially from developing countries. This study was aimed at comparing PA, FOF and QOL between assisted-living and community-dwelling older adults and also determining the correlations amongst the constructs for each group. Methods This cross-sectional survey involved consecutively sampled 114 older adults (≥65 years, ambulant and well-oriented in time, place and person) residing in conveniently selected ALFs (11.3% males) and adjoining communities (54.1% males). PA, FOF and QOL were evaluated using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly, the Modified Fall Efficacy Scale and the Short-form Health...

These may consequently impair the quality of life (QoL) of older adults. This study was used to investigate the prevalence of functional disability, depression, and level of quality of life of older adults residing in Uyo metropolis and its environs, Nigeria. This cross sectional survey involved 206 (116 females and 90 males) older adults with mean age of 69.8±6.7. The World Health Organization Quality of Life-OLD, Functional status Questionnaire (FSQ) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were used to measure quality of life, functional disability and depression respectively. Data was analysed using frequency counts and percentages and Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient, at 0.05 alpha level. 45.5% of participants had depression, and at least 30% had functional disability in at least one domain, but their quality of life was fairly good (&amp;amp;amp;gt;60.0%) across all domains. Significant correlation existed between depression scores and individual quality of life and functional disability domains and between overall QoL and each functional disability domain (p&amp;amp;amp;lt;0.001). Depression and functional disability were quite prevalent among sampled older adults but their QOL was not too severely affected. Since the constructs were interrelated, it seems interventions targeted at depression and functional status may invariably enhance the quality of life of the older adults.

This was a validation study involving 74 consenting stroke survivors and their 74 primary informal caregivers consecutively recruited from selected tertiary hospitals in South-East Nigeria (Igboland). The I-MSCRIM was researcher-administered to the participants. Obtained data was analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, range, mean, standard deviation, Spearman rank order correlation, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Intra-class Correlation Coefficient. Alpha level was set at 0.05. The mean ages of the stroke survivors (55.4% males) and their primary informal caregivers (41.9% males) were 50.14 ± 12.24 and 31.93 ± 10.9 years respectively. There was no significant difference in the community reintegration (CR) scores as rated by stroke survivors and their primary informal caregivers (p &amp;amp;amp;gt; 0.05). The correlations between stroke survivors&amp;amp;amp;#39; and primary informal caregivers&amp;amp;amp;#39; rated CR scores were all adequate and acceptable (ICC = 0.602-0.917). The discrepancy in the total CR scores between the two ratings was significantly influenced by primary informal caregivers&amp;amp;amp;#39; educational attainment (k = 13.15; p &amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.01). The I-MSCRIM has acceptable caregiver-proxy reliability among Igbo stroke survivors in South-East Nigeria. This suggests that primary informal caregivers of stroke survivors can reliably estimate the CR of their care recipients when I-MSCRIM is administered to them. This will be useful when a stroke survivor cannot respond to I-MSCRIM.

The Reintegration to Normal Living Index was used to assess the level of satisfaction with CI among the participants. Data was analysed using Spearman Rank Order Correlation, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests at 0.05 level of significance. The total level of satisfaction with CI among PLWE was poor (59.76±23.24). PLWE were severely restricted in nine out of the fourteen CI scores but were mildly or moderately restricted in the remaining five CI scores. The participants&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; total level of satisfaction with CI significantly correlated with their annual (r=-0.319; p=0.007), six-month (r=-0.275; p=0.021) and one-month (r=-0.221; p=0.025) episodes of seizures, and was significantly influenced by their occupational status (k=12.15; p=0.009) and highest educational attainment (k=12.39; p=0.006). Generally, the total level of satisfaction with CI among PLWE was poor. There is need for interventional programmes aimed at integrating PLWE into their various communities with special emphasis laid on unemployed and less educated ones having high seizure frequency.
