Helios, Adonis and magic: the treasures of a cistern in Amathous (Inscriptions of Amathous VIII) ... more Helios, Adonis and magic: the treasures of a cistern in Amathous (Inscriptions of Amathous VIII) The excavation of a cistern almost abutting the north wall of Amathous has brought to light a bronze jug and a lead magic tablet. The jug, termed an aporrusikeus, a hitherto unknown word, is dedicated to Helios Adonis, on the 29th of August 18 BC, or rather AD 18, by Onesikrates, son of Akkhaios. It is the first archaeological document to support a passage in Pausanias which mentions such a cult in Amathous. Unique in Cyprus in general, it attests the diffusion, under the impulse of the Lagides, of a culte, no doubt originally from Byblos, which constitutes a prefiguration of the solar syncretism increasingly popular during the Roman Empire. The tabella defixionis is one of the rare witnesses to the magic of the AD 7th century. It marks itself off from the 3rd century Amathousian texts by brevity, absence of references to the infernal divinities, and especially by the original depiction of the person targetted for punishment. It also adds three new words to our knowledge of the Greek language.

A relief has been uncovered here, representing Attis reclining, dead, nude and entirely emasculated. This unique figuration, expressing the rough local particularity of the Metroac cult, together with the analysis of the building plan make us consider the latter as the only real temple of Cybele known in Gaul. Aupert Pierre, Turcan Robert.
