What is the role of the language of violence and retribution in the imprecatory psalms in the psalter? What role can these psalms play in contemporary Christian liturgy? This essay explores the question of violence in the Psalter, in particular the language of revenge and retributive violence in the so-called imprecatory psalms. Long considered a difficulty in incorporating into Christian worship, these psalms have presented a hermeneutical challenge to contemporary interpreters. The history of ancient Israel is a history in which violent conflict was either an everyday reality, or a very real threat from warring empires all around. While violent language is concentrated in the imprecatory psalms (usually listed as 35; 58; 69; 83; 109, and 137), it can none-the-less be found interspersed throughout the psalter.
