This article explores the mechanisms used by the creators of Russian political talk shows to turn... more This article explores the mechanisms used by the creators of Russian political talk shows to turn public discussion into a propaganda display. Analysis of three popular shows demonstrates that informational selectiveness combined with an illusion of equal representation among guests with opposing views are the main mechanisms in the process of pre-production. The roles chosen by talk show hosts demonstrate the various communicative techniques used to achieve propaganda objectives, while the major propagandistic tool is discrediting opponents of the Russian authorities. The reactions of the audience are framed to create a fictitious background of ‘nationwide support’ for the propaganda discourse.

The ambiguity of the term “talk show” in the practice and theory of television journalism, diffic... more The ambiguity of the term “talk show” in the practice and theory of television journalism, difficulties in defining television programs like “talk shows” require to discover the essential format`s characteristics by which we could easily find out the broadcast of this type. The article analyzes the definitions of the concept in Russian and foreign dictionaries and also in the scientific literature.
The author investigates contentious issues in the definition of the term and essential characteristics of talk show: identification the genre of the conversation which takes place in the studio; the role of a live studio audience in talk; the border of the format. Besides, the term “talk show” is correlated to such categories as “format” and “genre”. The author raises the question about the correctness of the understanding of “talk shows” like the current genre of TV journalism. Finally, on systematizes distinctive characteristics of talk shows, highlighted by different researchers, and offers the list of essential characteristics of the broadcast of this type.

Структурно-композиционная схема определяется через приоритетный жанр, к которому обращаются журналисты при подготовке проекта, а также постоянные и вариативные элементы формата.

создания проектов «Честный понедельник»(2009−2012), «Метла» (2012), «Железные леди» (2013), а также исследуя передачи «К барьеру!» (2003−2009), «Воскресный вечер» (2005−2008), «НТВшники» (2009−2012), «Список Норкина» (2014−2015) на телеканале НТВ, автор анализирует влияние специфических черт общественно-политических ток-шоу на процесс проектирования телевизионного продукта.
Внимание фокусируется на начальном периоде работы: разработка концепции, конструирование формата и предпродакшн.

Неоднозначность понимания термина «ток-шоу» в практике и теории телевизионной жур-налистики, слож... more Неоднозначность понимания термина «ток-шоу» в практике и теории телевизионной жур-налистики, сложности при определении телевизионных программ как «ток-шоу» требуют выделения сущностных характеристик формата, по которым они были бы хорошо узнаваемы. В статье анализируются дефиниции понятия в российских и иностранных словарях, а также в научной литературе. Исследуются спорные вопросы в определении термина и сущностных характеристик передач: жанр разговора, происходящего в студии; роль зрителей, находящих-ся в студии, в разговоре; границы формата «ток-шоу». Также в статье термин «ток-шоу» соот-носится с такими категориями, как «формат» и «жанр». Поднимается вопрос о правомерности понимания ток-шоу как сложившегося жанра телевизионной журналистики. В завершение авторы систематизируют отличительные характеристики ток-шоу, выделяемые различными исследователями, предлагая перечень сущностных признаков передач данного вида.

Social and political talk show is one of the most popular format of the contemporary television b... more Social and political talk show is one of the most popular format of the contemporary television broadcasting in Russia. But its history and the problem of periodization is the poorly understood question. The author analyses the first USA talk show as a precondition of the format appearance, as well on Russian television. The article also investigates the origins of talk show on Soviet television in the 70s. The program «Ot vsej dushi» was distinguished as a prototype of modern social and political talk show. The author examines the development of the format after the easing of political censorship in the 80s and its heyday in the first decade of post-Soviet Russia in the 90s of the twentieth century. The final part represents the periodization of the history of talk show on the national television until 2000.
