Both projects, directed by Graciela Marcos and based in the Institute of Philosophy “Dr. Alejandro Korn” (Instituto de Filosofía “Dr. Alejandro Korn”) of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of the Universidad de Buenos Aires, were subsidised by the Secretaría de Ciencia y Técnica of this university and by the Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Técnológica (ANCyPT), to whom we would like to express our gratitude. Special thanks also to Fabián G. Mié, who, for several years, has been working on the question of dialectic in Plato and Aristotle and with whom, even if he has not formally joined our team, we have had the good fortune to exchange ideas and discuss many of the issues related to both projects. Fabián Mié’s work is therefore added to the works presented by Lucas M. Álvarez, María E. Díaz, Martín S...

In order to do that, it reexamines the Eutidemo to find apories' sense in the light of its general purpose and structure: the exhibition of the contrast between the sophistical and the philosophical conception of knowledge. By means of this interpretation, this article aims to show that the traditional discussion that focused in the antithesis between irony/knowledge and seriousness/joke isn't pertinent.

Nevertheless, it remains always linked to refutation. In this way, like dialectic, refutation assumes different characteristics. The aim of this work is to show how refutation takes a key role in the Sophist, even with unique features: far from facing an opponent of flesh and blood as in Socratic dialogues, the Eleatic Stranger faces hypotheses, and instead of examining consistence within the opponent’s beliefs, he draws upon a radical mechanism that focuses in the conditions of possibility of the (opponent’s) discourse.

This strategy constitutes a clear antecedent of the elenctic refutation offered by Aristotle inMetaphysics Gamma4 against the denier of the principle of non-contradiction and could be described as transcendental because it refers to conditions without which there wouldn’t be any speech. The paper aims to show that such a strategy is used both by Plato and Aristotle to deal with radical adversaries whose refutation allows the establishment of basic theses of their own philosophies.

To explain these tensions we propose a dual origin of his thought: Gorgias, as inheritor of treatises from both the poetic and the Parmenidean traditions, postulates a schema that lies between the aesthetic and the philosophical.
