After twenty years of separation this collective (the so-called Spanish War Children), encountered a completely different country. Consequently, and due to a whole set of family, occupational and socio-cultural circumstances, readjustment was not always possible and many returnees went back once again to the USSR. From bibliographical review and informative bulletins regarding returnees correspondence (collected by the Spanish Communist Party for propaganda purposes), this article analyses both expectations and disillusions which sustained late 1950s repatriations. Finally, rather than considering the predicament of homecoming from a limited two-sided standpoint (a regular success and failure adaptive pattern), we have opted for a more polyvalent approach, as it is proposed by the “late return” paradigm.

These mechanisms of exclusion, combined and mutually reinforcing, shape a triple exploitation system specifically aimed at women. The process is conducted on the basis of symbolic stigmatization and, from our perspective, it represents a proper form of structural violence which is strengthened for displaced women. Our aim is to track this symbolic and violent domination among female exiles and migrants, exploring how these displaced women first obviate their own necessities to attend those of men, and how later on they start to resist against their auto imposed neglect. This allows us to overcome any kind of victimhood elucidations while interpreting oppressed women as complete self-directed historical actors.

The initial hypothesis suggests that an intergenerational memory transmission is produced in the basis of the postmemory paradigm, which connects links straight with the transmittal of traumatic or nostalgic remembrances, the idea of Spain as the lost Fatherland and the consequent expectation of return. Furthermore, it is suggested that conflict is a natural consequence of this exchange just as it is consensus, while the first is far less well-studied than the other.

Me asaltaron preguntas: ¿entrenaron demasiado deprisa?

Me asaltaron preguntas: ¿entrenaron demasiado deprisa?
