We show that the wavenumber of the resulting flow satisfies a resonance condition in a cell of finite length, in analogy with light in a laser cavity. By tuning the length of the convection cell so that two adjacent modes have approximately the same growth rate, we have been able to produce two-frequency convective flows at onset. These flows are modulated in space and time due to the interference of the two modes. Study of these modulated states has allowed accurate determination of the linear parameters of the system.

Measurements of the absorption spectrum were carried out at various pH, temperature, and humidity. The direction of proton transfer was the same as in the normal photocycle of the wild-type bacteriorhodopsin: from the internal to the external side of the membrane. The effect on this process of a terminal acceptor Glu-204 was shown.

The apparatus is based on a common implementation of ASTM D5470 using meter bars. However, the apparatus in the present study is unique in that it utilizes small thermistors to make precise thermal measurements (plusmn0.003 K).

It is demonstrated that a droplet of liquid can be reversibly switched between the superhydrophobic “rolling ball” state and the hydrophilic immobile droplet state by the application of electrical voltage and current. The nature of the transition mechanism is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The reported results provide novel methods of manipulating liquids at microscale.
