This study investigated the effects of ultraviolet-A (UV-A) and ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light on the mechanical properties in oyster mushrooms during the growth. Experiments were carried out with irradiation of the mushrooms with UV-A (365 nm) and UV-C (254 nm) light during growth. The exposure time ranged from 10 minutes to 60 minutes at intervals of 10 minutes and irradiation was done for three days.The samples for experimental studies were cut into cylindrical shapes of diameter 12.50mm and thickness 3.00mm. The storage modulus, loss modulus, and loss factor of the irradiated samples and control samples were determined for both UV bands and there was a significant difference between the storage modulus, loss modulus, and loss factor of the irradiated samples by both UV bands with reference to the control sample,

The study was based on Liquidity theory, Signaling dividend theory and risk aversion theory. The study adopted explanatory design and targeted 153 management staff of 24 registered SACCOs located in Siaya County from where a sample size of 111 was calculated and respondents were selected using stratified random sampling technique. Structured questionnaires were used to collect primary data. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were computed by Statistical Package of Social Scientists version 24. Analyzed data was presented in form of tables. From a total of 111 questionnaires that were dispatched for data collection, 95 questionnaires were returned when completely filled, representing a response rate of 85.6% which was good for generalizability of the research findings to a wider population. Although some ethnobotanical surveys have been undertaken in some arid and semiarid areas of Kenya, limited studies have documented priority medicinal plants as well as local people's awareness of conservation needs of these plants. This study sought to establish the priority traditional medicinal plants used for human, livestock healthcare, and those used for protecting stored grains against pest infestation in Mwingi district. Further, the status of knowledge among the local people on the threat and conservation status of important medicinal species was documented. This study identified 18 species which were regarded as priority traditional medicinal plants for human health. This study examined the association between the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare O... more This study examined the association between the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) accreditation scores and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Inpatient Quality Indicators and Patient Safety Indicators (IQIs/PSIs). JCAHO accreditation data from 1997 to 1999 were matched with institutional IQI/PSI performance from 24 states in the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. Most institutions scored high on JCAHO measures despite IQI/PSI performance variation with no significant relationship between them. Principal component analysis found 1 factor each of the IQIs/PSIs that explained the majority of variance on the IQIs/PSIs. Worse performance on the PSI factor was associated with worse performance on JCAHO scores (P=.02). No significant relationships existed between JCAHO categorical accreditation decisions and IQI/PSI performance. Few relationships exist between JCAHO scores and IQI/PSI performance. There is a need to continuously reevaluate all measurement tools to ensure they are providing the public with reliable, consistent information about health care quality and safety.

The study aimed to identify Trypanosoma species circulating in cattle, their genetic diversity and distribution around the Akagera NP. Methodology A cross-sectional study was carried out in four districts, where 1,037 cattle blood samples were collected. Epidemiologic data on animal trypanosomosis in Lambwe valley are decades old, and the recent suspected outbreaks of the disease in the valley necessitate the urgent bridging of this data gap. This cross-sectional study estimated the prevalence of bovine trypanosomosis, identified risk factors, and investigated the occurrence of species with zoonotic potential in Lambwe valley. The area is ~324 km2, of which 120 km2 is the Ruma National Park. Blood was sampled from the jugular and marginal ear veins of 952 zebu cattle between December 2018 and February 2019 and tested for trypanosomes using the Buffy Coat Technique (BCT) and PCR-High-Resolution Melting (HRM) analysis of the 18S RNA locus.
