Above and beyond the apparent incompatibilities between surrealist and lexicographical writing, the dictionary was an especially rich genre in surrealism. It primarily was the response to an institutional choice—the encyclopedic ambition of the movement. It then became the natural attraction for a heterogeneous genre and an anti-architectural order that positioned words as the key to everything. Finally, the dictionary answered a polemical undertaking that informed the critique of vocabulary and expanded the sense of it in an authoritarian manner. The playful exploitation of terms beyond their prescribed usage, however, led to conceiving of language from a viewpoint not so distant from certain notions of linguistics.
