ABSTRACTLarge‐scale excavations in the first half of the twentieth century conducted by Glenn A. ... more ABSTRACTLarge‐scale excavations in the first half of the twentieth century conducted by Glenn A. Black at Angel Mounds were viewed as moving archaeology away from its antiquarian roots toward legitimate scientific practice. Although this transformation led to innovative field methods, amassed collections of unprecedented size and depth, and created foundational archaeological programs and knowledge, the past and the peoples who occupied it became increasingly objectified and marginalized. How did archaeological practice on such an expansive scale remove from history the people whose heritage is memorialized at a national historic landmark? And how has this history impacted archaeological practice today? To address these questions, I draw on personal letters and published accounts for insights into the interests and problematic aspects of Black's archaeological practices before turning to a consideration of some present‐day continuities, challenges, and ways forward. The issues and biases revealed in the case of Black's early 20th century archaeological praxis are not unique for the time. Nonetheless, underlying problems of objectification and racism challenge us to not only confront legacy biases and the harm they have caused, but to work toward ethical ways to use such collections now and in the future.

The former have attracted considerable scholarly attention, while the latter have not. We attempt to address this bias by focusing on a substantial number of woodworking tools from three sites in southwestern Indiana. All belong to Caborn-Welborn, a late Mississippian culture that developed at the Ohio-Wabash confluence after the decline of the Angel polity and the establishment of the “Vacant Quarter” across a large portion of the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. In this article, we examine these specimens’ technomorphological characteristics and use-wear traces, as well as the sources of the cherts from which they were made. In addition, our study has two comparative components: First, we investigate similarities and differences between the Caborn-Welborn woodworking tools and those from both the Angel culture and other parts of the Mississippian world; second, we ex...

Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Office of Cultural Resources Management (GBL-OCRM), Indiana University conducted archaeological testing and data recovery at the Boyd Site, 12 Wy 289 (INDOT 89-32). Project plans included the construction of the proposed INDOT Centerville Sub-district maintenance unit on a 15.5-acre parcel of land purchased by INDOT. The Boyd Site is located on a gently sloping glacial plain that overlooks Martindale Creek, near Cambridge City, Wayne County, Indiana, and it is estimated to cover 0.48 ha, of which 62.3 m2 (670.6 ft2) was subject to excavation during the combined testing and data recovery. This amounts to 1.3 % of the total site area within the project boundaries. The Boyd Site Late Archaic deposits conta...
