As the author of a recent work on the history of universals (Pinzani, 2018), I was asked for a commentary on Augusto’s article “Bridging Mainstream and Formal Ontology” (Augusto, 2021), which aims at showing that medieval ontological investigations can be relevant for contemporary ontology engineering. In this commentary, I begin by saying something about my way of reading 12th-century logical literature and then offer some modest considerations on the general theme addressed in Augusto's article

Smith e P. Simons. ...

Each specified expression (= value expression) introduced can be derived by adding a specification to an expression of the natural language ("Mario Rossi"-"Mario Rossi born in … on …") or it can be associated with it without sharing any part of it ("water"-"H2O"). We can imagine different languages and different translation procedures from natural language; each procedure imposes a choice among different value expressions. There are two "windows" that the syntax of the specified expressions "opens up to the world", so to speak; these are the following formulas: The value of /x/ = x', where "x", "x'" are names, /x/ is true iff x', where "x", "x'" are sentences. In the second formula categorical reductions and compositions of the specified expressions must have been performed. In cases where these passages are not available, we would remain with a syntactic expression of the type of sentences, but not, such as to exemplify the traditional definition of truth.

This perspective prevailes in the Middle Ages after the semantic turn of the twelfth century: If we want to account for the truth, we must account for the relation of meaning, we must say for what kind of objects the expressions of natural language and in particular the general ones can stand. I would like to show how the various theories proposed have been criticized because they were questionable, that is, the position of the metaphysical problem contrasts with the non-metaphysical way we commonly have of speaking of general terms and the truth of sentences.

Using language to tell the truth, 2023

In language learning, a perceptual element is present at the origin and accompanies the use of introduced expressions. This element constitutes a sort of connection with reality, making efficient communication between speakers possible. In the following phases, the language is at the service of diverse needs, the connections and the original information are dispersed in a complex communication network in which, as they say, the anchor points have a peripheral position. What we want to focus on is a particular use, the assertive, for which in some cases a phylogenetic relationship can be traced with 'primitive' uses (such as: 'look!', 'This is a ...' ...). We would like to discuss from a philosophical point of view the information and the ability (competence) necessary to use expressions indicatively.

In this book the author reconstructs the history of the problem considering a selection of medieval representative texts and authors. The source of medieval and postmedieval debate is identified in the Socratic-Platonic survey on the definition of concepts.
In the Categories, Aristotle discusses important topics concerning the relations that exist between logical terms. In particular he establishes a kind of predication principle: categorial terms have a certain predication relation if (and only if) some facts expressed by ordinary sentences hold. The Categories also because of their particular disciplinary status, halfway between logic and metaphysics, leave a number of questions open.
